VMs - Can't Run More Than One

CuChulainn

I'm a newb. Please be patient with me.

I'm trying to develop my home lab in order to build my resume. Hoping to get a helpdesk job, soon.

As I'm trying to follow along with some really helpful guys explaining what the skills necessary to start, one has to do with Server Manager. With or even without that being the case, I'd still like to be able to run more than one VM at once, but I currently can't. It always says when I boot up the second one that the error is HostMemoryLow.

I'm working with 4 GB of RAM, nearly 600+ GB disk drive, Intel Core i3 CPU. Yes, it's a laptop, but that's all I have available at the moment.

I've messed around with the base memory of both VMs, to no success.

Any pointers, tips, tricks?

Who is the greatest Man?

Ooh 4GB way too low.

Storage and i3 should be fine (so long as you're running literally 1 core each.

8GB AT LEAST is what's needed, especially if you're using Windows 10 with all the latest updates.

I have a client that is trying to do a similar thing on their machine, we're going with 16GB for breathing room

100% recommend getting at least 8GB, if not more, gives your PC and the guest virtual machines breathing room

4GB is definitely way to low, upgrading to at least 8GB should allow the VM to run but that laptop in general is still pretty low spec for running multiple VMs depending on what you are trying to use them for. If it's a 4 core i3 you can run two VMs with 1 core each but if it's a dual core i3 which most i3 laptops are you'll run into major performance issues trying to run more than one. I'd recommend piecing together a  6 to 8 core CPU desktop with at least 16GB of Ram and a 1TB SSD for a VM/ server setup especially if you plan on using it for work.

Main Desktop: CPU - i9-14900k | Mobo - Gigabyte Z690 Aorus Elite AX DDR4 | GPU - ASUS TUF Gaming OC RTX 4090 RAM - Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 64GB 3600mhz | AIO - H150i Pro XT | PSU - Corsair RM1000X | Case - Phanteks P500A Digital - White | Storage - Samsung 970 Pro M.2 NVME SSD 512GB / Sabrent Rocket 1TB Nvme / Samsung 860 Evo Pro 500GB / Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2tb Nvme / Samsung 870 QVO 4TB  |

TV Streaming PC: Intel Nuc CPU - i7 8th Gen | RAM - 16GB DDR4 2666mhz | Storage - 256GB WD Black M.2 NVME SSD |

Phone: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 - Phantom Black 512GB |

What OS are you trying to run in your VMs? Host OS? You can run multiple VMs on a system with only 4GB of RAM, but it's tight, and you'll have to be extremely conservative in your RAM allocation to each VM.

Phobos: AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 16GB 3000MHz DDR4, ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, 1TB Samsung SSD 980, 450W Corsair CXM, Corsair Carbide 175R, Windows 10 Pro

Polaris: Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASRock X79 Extreme6, 12GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, 1TB Crucial MX500, 750W Corsair RM750, Antec SX635, Windows 10 Pro

Pluto: Intel Core i7-2600, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASUS P8Z68-V, 4GB XFX AMD Radeon RX 570, 8GB ASUS AMD Radeon RX 570, 1TB Samsung 860 EVO, 3TB Seagate BarraCuda, 750W EVGA BQ, Fractal Design Focus G, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

York (NAS): Intel Core i5-2400, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3, HP Compaq OEM, 240GB Kingston V300 (boot), 3x2TB Seagate BarraCuda, 320W HP PSU, HP Compaq 6200 Pro, TrueNAS CORE (12.0)
