What MB to buy today for a R7 2700x, that can take a newer CPU later in the future?

I recently Upgraded my CPU to 5900X replacing the 2700x

Setup:

MB: ASUS x470 Pro

RAM: 64 GB

Noctua D15 Cooler

NZXT C750 PSU

Now I am left with the 2700x CPU, and I want to build a system for my son, that he can use for his college.

So the Question:

What MB can I buy today that can support the 2700x and also maybe the 3000 or even the 5000 series for when he can buy the CPU and upgrade himself...

I can buy the ASUS X470 again, but that is coming to be around $199, and I know there have to be some better options.

He would be using the PC for school work and gaming.

Either a B550 or X570 motherboard will offer the best length of support for AM4. I don't think it is currently known how much longer AM4 will be viable so really there is no way of guaranteeing anything other than B550 and X570 are the newest therefore will have the longest amount of support out of the currently available AM4 boards.

I agree, but does it support R7 2700x?

Some of the B550 and X570s do not have support for the 2000 series processor so you'll have to check CPU compatibility before you purchase one.

Buy the new motherboard for your 5900X, take out the X470 you have now and keep the 2700X in that? Seems the far simpler solution.

I was planning to do just that, but, strapped for cash, kind of...sending a kid to college is freaking expensive around here.... LOL... I have all the parts for the for the spare build except the MB. So asking the community.

B550 only supports Zen 2 and 3. Some people have claimed to get lesser gen running on it, but there's no official support. You'll need to stick with B450, if you're wanting something cheap. You could do X570, but at that point, I'd upgrade your own board and just the X470 for your kid's build.

Ahh yeah, that's what it was. Thanks for clarifying. That is a better option.
