This should be illegal… - Manufacturers are swapping SSD components

Apart from Samsung, what other manufacturers are reliable?

I've had good results with crucial SSD's.

Usually a bit cheaper, specs aren't as good but for the average person it's plenty.

Samsung, Micron, and Western Digital all have near-total or total vertical integration in their SSD lineups. (All 3 brands have at least some products that are designed entirely in-house, since they all produce & design DRAM, NAND, and controllers)

That doesn't necessarily mean that they're more reliable or better than other brands, Sabrent has an excellent track record and they use Phison controllers on their drives. It just means that they have full control over the supply chain and components that go into their SSDs.

What about Crucial? (Their P5 is a Prime day deal)

I thought this was widely known, more specifically from Kingston?

They have been doing this to SD and microSD cards back when 64GB cards were quite high-end

If you have an old microSD kingston card laying around, do some benchmarks and check if it matches the class that's printed on it.

It will likely not meet the specs.

They still do this today btw. But nobody cares these days I guess.

That makes a ton of sense actually, and would explain why most of mine are complete garbage when transferring. Always thought it was the card readers not the cards... Luckily I have gone with Sony Tough and Lexar Pro units.

I bought mine on Dec 2019. Have used it since as main boot drive.

Have also noticed the performance(benchmarks) drops noticeably when drives are fuller.

I dunno I have of of the good ones or the bad ones 😞

Can someone interpret how unlucky I am from the ssd-tool data?

LTT - I have quantity 9 - 1TB versions if you want them for more testing.

Purchased them over the course of 1.5 years.

Can't provide device details because they are all running in Linux systems right now, and the tool you provided only works in Windows.

Keep up the good work!

It doesn't always accurately report the DRAM, but everything else is accurate. Also prints out a text document with SMART and block data.

Right click and save as, you may have to tell your browser that the file is safe.

Some programs detect it as a false positive but in my experience it was fine. (That being said I'm not encouraging the use of this tool since I haven't been able to figure out who developed it and can't vouch for its security, it wasn't used on my workstation but a dedicated test bench. It's merely there for those curious)

didnt want to risk it, i think my A/V is deleting it as soon as I click. I run CDM instead and this is what I'm getting. looks like I have the worst variant.

Have you checked if your drive is connected to the PCH instead of the CPU directly? That can have a severe impact on performance (particularly on X570)

using b550M Mortar, using the adata on pcie gen 3 nvme slot on mb (samsung 980 pro on gen 4 slot). is it via software to check?

The 2nd slot is connected to the chipset indeed, no need for software.

thanks, and that only means I've got the effed up version of this ADATA $#!+ as my R&W speeds are 1000 mb/s slower than rated speed

Quite the opposite, the point is that going through the chipset can limit the bandwidth, you'd have to test it on the CPU slot to be sure you're only testing the drive itself and not potentially taking a hit from the chipset.

I have two of these drives (1TB and 2TB), purchased in November 2019 which appear to be running at suitable speeds. Unfortunately I'm unable to run the SMI tool (doesn't work for me), so here's the CDM scores if anyone wants to compare. I do have passive heatsinks installed on all my NVME drives, as I did experience thermal throttling when running CDM prior to the heatsinks (installed prior to the September images).

I've also got scores from the same two devices in September 2020, so I might as well include these as well. I'm perplexed as to what the difference is between September and today however, given the disk usage is broadly the same and my drives have apparently gotten faster...

Adding info from AIDA64, same for both drives (other than size):

I'm not sure if I'm reading this right, but mine has a SM2262EN controller, but the flash is a Samsung 3dv4-64L one? This was bought around early February 2021.

yeah didn't trust adata since I saw them in store. went with samsung, although they can do some sh*t too.

at least they would maybe stay somewhat similar, if changes happens and have hopefully decent TBW spec.

Samsung, crucial, and maybe WD.

Also what is the point of specs, if you don't show what the actual specification of normal operation is like?

That really should be a standard and law, while things could be adjusted, it needs to meet the baseline while other claims can be for "marketing" or very selective results.

Else if it doesn't meet a set baseline, it would be classifed as another product, and if they just had too high of a standard compared to the components.

It should go as a new unit or as a new type of that unit, else it would be false claims of what you bought. Although this might not specify software locks/issues.

Like with phones, different ICPU that has completely different specs and lifetime while being the same phone?! although the other one that is used instead of snapdragon seems to have gotten better and might be more comparable to snapdragon now? but older phones, overheating or battery issues to performance... not great, while paying for the same phone...

Mine just spits out an error (same thing when I tried it when Linus announced the bounty on WAN Show months ago).  First M.2 slot on a x570 board, so that's direct CPU lanes.  Bought at the end of 2019.

I get the "error open disk" message no matter what drive I try to access this on.

bought mine back in December 2020, seems like it's getting slower with 2/3 of it full. HD Sentinel reports that the health has lowered to 94% as well (could be from the heat cause I'm not using the included heatsink)
