iPadOS 15: Files App Gains NTFS Support & Progress Indicator!

Quotes

Quote

The Files app has also gotten a new circular progress indicator to indicate the transfer of data when moving or copying files. Tapping the graphic opens a larger progress bar showing further details on the data transferred/remaining, the estimated time remaining, and the ability to cancel the transfer.

Apple in iPadOS 15 has added the ability to access NTFS-formatted media from within the Files app.

My thoughts

Apple final answers Linus' problems with the iPad and the rant on the WAN show last week.

These wernt the only issues he had though.

This fixes the first one, the most basic thing, but its not perfect now.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Thought so. It's read-only from an NTFS volume. Not read/write.

Anyone remember https://www.macdrive.com/ ? Does OSX now read NTFS natively too. In the past that wasn't the case.

Edit: That utility was the other way around, Mac drives on Windows.

Yeah, no progress bar made using the Files App basically impossible. File transfers will also fail in the background (at least on my iPhone 8 Plus), and transfers are just super slow to begin with give that lighting is only USB 2.0.

macOS has been able to read from NTFS volumes for nearly 20 years. No software is needed to read NTFS volumes.

It's always been an experimental feature, but it's there. Probably because the intent is to read from USB drives, and not necessarily internal drives where write access would be desirable.

It's not experimental; it's just not fully featured. It's for compatibility reasons with macOS and Windows.

Why though? Is it because Apple is worried about corrupting an NTFS volume upon a write-back? The only viable file system that's cross compatible between both platforms is exFAT. That, or you abstract through SMB with network shares.

I've never really cared enough to look into it, but if I had to guess it's probably got something to do with licensing or reliability concerns. It can be enabled within macOS through a simple terminal command, but Apple doesn't support it.

Though, does Android have actual file progress? As far as I remember Android only had progress if multiple files were involved and it showed progress of multiple files being moved or copied, but not the progress of individual files. Has that been changed after Android Pie?

It does

It sits in the notification area

And it doesn't stop if you leave the file manager app

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

Varies from app to app.

I use FX File Explorer and it has a progress bar for file transfers. The Samsung browser does as well, although only as a notification.

huh...There are a couple of thrid party NTFS drivers so you can write, like Paragon NTFS,  I've heard, though they can corrupt things...power users usually advise against them...I wonder if tthis is what they mean...
