What if we use copper plates instead of thermal pads

What if we replace the 3080 or 3090 thermal pads with a piece of copper and fill the gaps with thermal paste. Will that improve thermals ?

Maybe another crazy Colling idea for a LTT forum ; )

Then thermal adhesive instead of paste? As when those copper pads move, it's lights off.

Copper conducts electricity, (most)thermal pads do not.

Altho direct to copper via thermal paste would work better, it might not be advisable for the exact reason @Tan3l6mentiones.

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

This is basically just current cooler contacting the chip with thermal paste that you are describing. If this is about the vrm and such then well those thermal pads are there for a VERY good reason and that reason being to not short things out.

That's called a shim and you wouldn't get any benefit  if the cooler is made correctly as that's exactly what the cooler is. Optimally the two surface between the IHS and cooler would touch perfectly but they don't so you use thermal paste which is very malleable to fill the gaps

A long time ago, it wasn't uncommon to mod a GPU VRAM so that the memory was covered with copper heatsinks. The issue is additional heat VRAM generates and ensuring heatsink uniformity coverage on all VRAM modules with a monolithic heatsink; so that's why squishy pads are used.

The reason they use thermalpaste or thermal pads is that it fills up the small gaps between the heatsink and the chip.

 

if you use a copper plate, there will still be minute gaps/crevices on the heatsink/chip. causing bad thermal conductivity.
