Very loud coil whine

Hi all,

 

I built my computer just after Christmas a year and a half ago (back when you could get a GPU easily). Ever since I built it, there's been some coil whine, but I just relocated my setup and it sounds a lot louder now. I'm pretty sure it's the GPU because when I look around in games the pitch changes, and it's louder/quieter depending on how demanding a load it's working on. (though Minecraft is a lot louder than other games that might be more demanding).

I'd appreciate any thoughts on how to fix, or even just conformation that this is coil whine and not anything else.

Is there even coils to whine on modern motherboards? I know it is still an issue on GPUs, but on modern motherboards I believe we can just skip the step of "where is the sound coming from" and just assume the GPU. 

 

Have you looked other places around the internet for videos about reducing coil while, or did your first thought was to go to the LTT forums. I think Linus has even made a video or three about the issue. And from my understanding that except for waterblocked GPUs, where it is more common, the presence of coil whine is very much hit or miss across models even within the same SKU.

What FPS are you running? GPU's tend to have coil whine when pushing them to max, and I noticed I get coil whine always when I have unlocked fps.

coil whine is not really fixable, and it is not harmful to pc parts. you can try to cap fps to lower it tho

I fixed a similar coil whine just by doing some BIOS settings. It first seemed like the noise was from the GPU. So I went and bought a new one. But it didn't help

 

Check your BIOS and the CPU settings for C-states. It's worth a try.
