Gigabyte rtx 3080 gaming oc missing memory chip ??!?

Today my mate from pc part shop asked to check my 3080, he sent me photo from clients gigabyte 3080 gaming oc and i have this model too. CHECK PHOTO

it's bottom of the card, i think there should be memory chip, i checked my card and i see exactly the same. Any explanation ?

No no, if you check every dissasembly of this card, there should be memory chip there 100% but it's missing

It's fine, all 3080s are configured like that. They tend to be missing certain memory chips. If it works and shows up as 10gb then you should be fine.

Was this bought right away at launch? Maybe they rushed the production... Who knows.? Are there any performance drawbacks?

the odd thing is, that if you check some dissasembly of this card, only on the top of the card 1 out of three spots should be populated, and bottom one from photo should have memory chip too

3080 GPUs come with 10GB memory, with that empty slot filled you will get 12GB (and a bit more bus width, increasing bandwidth). RTX 3090 has further doubled that (with memory chips on both sides of the PCB) to 24GB.

 

Each GDDR6 module is 8Gb or 1GB in capacity.

i have it for 3 months, main issue poor thermal pads, and gigabyte doesnt allow to change it yourself

Main problem is , that it's odd that there is no memory module in that spot, if you check gigabyte gaming oc dissasembly in each video you will see that only upper 1 out of 3 banks are populated, and bottom one should be populated aswell, but it's not

Which one being empty doesnt matter as far as the GPU's concerned. I'm not sure if Nvidia forces it to be done in a certain way but if Nvidia didn't, it's up to the board partner to decide how to fit their design

Then your card should have 2 chips on the top, to reach the required capacity/bus width. Don't worry, if it works normally. Memory chip locations can change between revision and revision, and considering the current situation, and the stress and demand on production of these gpus, things might be "changed without notice".

i would think the spot changes depending on which part of the die is disabled

It can still be a different revision of the same model. 10 GB VRAM is 10 GB VRAM. If you really want to be paranoid check e.g. the V20057 with your card and any other reference serial number you can find, but it might even be undocumented as it really doesn't matter to a consumer as long as there is 10 GB of working VRAM.

Gigabyte is known for being the anti-neat freak, with so many revisions in their lineup sharing the same name. Dont worry.

Yes, but do you understand that if your card reads as 10G there is no memory chip "missing"?

 

You're repeating the same thing without telling us what your card actually reads (unless i missed it)

 

Can you post a screen shot of the first page when you open GPUZ?  That should clearly show if something is "missing" or not.
