40" 5K2K displays: which is better, DELL U4021QW or LG 40WP95C?

altermaan

Hello everyone!

I'm on the verge of buying one of those new 40" 5K2K displays, either the DELL U4021QW or the LG 40WP95C. Actually, it's probably going to be the Dell since LG still hasn't released the 40WP95C. The question then is: does is make sense to wait for the LG 40WP95C given it's better specs (Thunderbolt 4 instead of 3, 72Hz incl. FreeSync Support instead of plain old 60Hz), what do you guys think?

Cheers,

Daniel

I think it is better to wait a year to see if 100 to 120hz versions come out if you mainly want to play games.

I bought a 3440 X 1440 60hz monitor in 2015. If I would have waited a year it would have been 100hz and I probably still be using it.

I bought a 3840 X 1600 75hz monitor in 2019. If I would have waited a year it would have been 144hz. Again I would still be using it.

I will eventually get this panel but I need more Hz.

If you want one for productivity get either one.  My 38" LG is now used my my Son for video editing and it is a big success. For 4k editing the 40" 5k2k would be perfect.

I think the biggest difference will be the built in KVM switch of the Dell monitor, including an ethernet connectivity built in, these are features that aren't available on the LG, where they went for USB4 as their USP and if you want eithernet/KVM switch you'll need to do some magic with dongels on the USB 4 daisy chain.

I'm actually looking at the same monitors as you are, while the kvm switch of the Dell would actually better suit to my use case, I do tend to lean more towards the LG  because of their implementation of USB 4 and Freesync (both are missing from the Dell) As you I'm also wondering when they will actually release it to the public.

LG is seriously testing my patience 🙂 does anybody remember what was the time between their announcement and actual launch of LG's first 5K2K monitor (LG 34WK95U) at the time?

And just for completeness, I'm also looking at a 3rd contender on the market: https://news.lenovo.com/pressroom/press-releases/latest-thinkpad-portfolio-ready-to-do-business-anywhere/ the Lenovo Thinkvision P40w-20 which also supports USB 4/TB 4 and has also a built in KVM, but still misses Freesync

Features-at-a-glance:

  • 2 x Thunderbolt 4, 1 x HDMI 2.0, 1 x DisplayPort 1.4; 1 x 3.5mm Audio Out; gigabit Ethernet, 4 x USB 3.2 Type-A, 1 x USB 3.2 Type-B and 1 x USB 3.2 Type-C

  • 3 weeks later...

I was facing the same dilemma and ended up going for Dell purely because of availability. I ordered mid-March and received it mid-April, ordered straight from Dell.

I owned the Samsung S34E790C and LG 38GN950-B in the past, which were both great monitors, but I really needed the 5K2K for productivity use.

I've only had the Dell for a week, but I like the resolution a lot and the refresh rate of 60Hz doesn't disturb me a single bit. It's very decent for my use, so far I've only found the speakers quality to be somewhat lacking, and brightness could be better, but I guess you can't have it all.
