XFX XTR 550w (not scientific)

Hello fellow LTT members.

Also this review won't be scientific as all as I have no way of measuring the interesting stuff like the ripple of this particular unit.

The XFX XTR line is, if I'm correct, based on the Seasonic g-series of PSUs, but comes at a noticeably lower price than the 550w seasonic G-series equivalent, at least in here.

There's also plenty of reviews on that particular series. This for example: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=323

I recently, well two days ago order this PSU, the XFX XTR 550w, because to me it seemed like a really tremendous value.

Why 550w some may ask. My current rig, specs in profile, is not going to go nowhere near 550 watts in power consumption, and I really don't see myself going multi-GPU in the future so this little unit cost me 80 euros which in my opinion couldn't have gotten me anything better(even the XFX TS 550w, the non-modular variant was a few euros more expensive)

This unit replaces my old very generic Cooler Master PSU

I decided to replace this before I absolutely had to. As you can see the promised specs are far from impressive.

As you can see the PSU is fully modular and has the typical XFX looks.

This unit also sports a hybrid fan mode, meaning the fan won't turn on until the PSU reaches 20% load or 25 degrees Celsius in temperature. Which is obviously good for all the silence freaks.

A Linus approved 2-molex harness

A beautifully sleeved 24-pin, really high quality compared to XFX's core series PSUs

Now that's about it, the installation was easy, and I didn't notice any flaws on the included connectors.

All but the 24-pin cable are flat and all the wires on all the cables are black.

My case is equally crappy as my old PSU, and the wires are way too long for a top-mounted PSU, but at least I don't have any extra ones flopping around.

Here are some pics of the installed product. Excuse the crappy cable-management, I really can't do any better.

It did not improve my gaming performance, what a bummer right. But it also did not allow me to OC my graphics card any further, which pretty much just confirms that I lost the lottery.

And as a bonus, it also attracts all kinds of vermin, as do most tech products :D

TLDR; conclusion:

+ 80+ gold

+ Price (80 €)

+ Fully modular

+ Hybrid fan-mode

+ Build quality (If really based on the Seasonic G series)

+ The modular interface is directly attached to the board, not via a bundle of cables

+/- Looks, a bit too extravagant for me.

- Not really

Good PSU, OK review, bad PC case. It pains to see such configuration, such components in a case like that...

Yes, the case can go if it pleases, but I figured upgrading the PSU was far more important :)

Indeed.

It a shame that XFX PSUs Are not that Well known. A bit Going Against the stream but I'd rather Pick This unit up rather than anything e.g. Corsair offer for this price or wattage range.

I completely agree. I have a 1250 XFX PSU and it has been going strong for almost 2 years now with zero problems. I must say, Im really happy that XFX teamed up with Seasonic for the internals of their PSU's.
