Is 720P Gaming still alive?

Brandi93

Just curious how many of you play on 720p resolution or resolution less than 1080p. Nowadays everyone is talking about 1440p and even 4K, yet here I am with my Sapphire R9 290X 4GB and 8GB DDR3 + i3 4th Gen. I'm in difficult times and right now I have to make do with 720p. Played Nioh 2 yesterday, 60FPS+ on max settings 720p which still looks crisp when I enable GPU Scaling in AMD options (on my 1080p monitor). Hope I'm not a lone 720p gamer lol.

And how do you find 1080p compared to 720p? I know it must be better but by how much? Right now it's too hard for me to upgrade for being without a job and also with the Crypto Mining craze GPU prices.. so even though I have a 1080p monitor, I play 720p because of my hardware.

I own multiple 1080p and recently got a 1440p monitor

But I mainly game on my 768p monitor because... bedside rig is comfy

It does allow my gtx 970 to breathe more, but I recently upgraded that too, yet am still on the monitor haha

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

It's very similar to cars on the road.  For every Lambo or Bentley you see, there are dozens of Kia's and Fords rolling 100k+ miles.

You're in the enthusiast section of the 'net, of course you're going to see a lot of high end talk.

Look at Steam's breakdown for a more realistic telling.

Enjoy what ya got, it's yours and it works.  Done.

Edit:  For what it's worth, I'm 47 years old and make decent money.  Was not always this way.  People and their priorities are their business, as are you and yours.  Never compare, life is too short to worry what others have or do.

It's a bigger monitor, but the dencity is higher, even though it's a like 12in 1360x768 vs a 17in 1920x1080

I have a 4K monitor but I've started to play at 1080p. I don't notice the difference in resolution (only minor pixelating in text) and max settings at 60FPS is much better than medium at 40FPS - I'll also get a longer lifespan.

I don't know anyone still on 720P. My little circle is all on 1080P but I have a few friends on 1440P and even fewer on 4K.

I look forward to upgrading to 1440P in a few years, when that time comes I might even consider 4K but for now... 1080P.

Why didn't you play at 1080p with lower settings?

For me 1080p @ low simply doesn't look as good as 720p @ max. Don't ask me why but it's the way it is for me haha

now that we all will have to be using GT 710 when our cards die, I think VGA gaming will be making a comeback.

I spent most of college lyfe gaming on that weird 1300x768 res.

It made such a difference going to 1080p.

Which can be done a 290x.

Kepler for the win!
Except for the Titan Black and Titan Z (which cost a lot and don't perform amazingly), no Kepler cards have above 3GB of VRAM, making them useless to miners.

Plus, Kepler has the added bonus of supporting macOS Mojave, Catalina, and Big Sur with hardware acceleration.

My Switch is my main gaming system nowadays.  I play half at home and half portably at work.  The Switch's built in screen is 720p..

so yeah, I'd say it's still alive considering how many Switches are out there.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

The answer to your question is, yes, it is still alive, but not a lot of people are playing at that res.

Someone mentioned the Steam Hardware Survey, not sure if you found the results but here they are for February 2021:

The results show a majority are using 1080p, but the amount of people using 1366 x 768 is higher than 1440p or 4k (2160p). As previously mentioned this is a forum of enthusiasts so you are more likely to see higher end systems here, which can make it seem like the amount of people using high end specs is higher than it actually is.

I'm a 720p gamer too. My laptop can't handle 1080p too much heat and very low fps, and I'd take fps over res any day everyday, I'm also comfortable at dropping res to 1024 x 768 if need be. BTW, my laptop has a 15.6 inch 1080p display.

Attention is what makes life meaningful.

Also, please quote me for a reply. 🙂

Probably for custom user set resolutions, higher resolutions like 8k, and anything lower than the listed ones.

I remember playing Wing Commander 4 in 1280x1024 and thinking I was in heaven. It's not about how many pixels your display has - it's about how well they are used to achieve pleasing artistic results.

There are games on the Switch (at 720p and lower) that look better visually than most PS4/XB1 titles.

Art is subjective. Games are art. Can higher resolutions look better? Sure... if done right, but there is nothing wrong with playing at lower resolutions.

Been on 1080p for awhile. I did get a 1440p monitor once and sold it a few months later. 1080p is enough for me and don't see myself going higher resolution even 10 years later!
