Can i defrag ssd

I have multiple drives. Mechanical, sata ssd and m2 ssd. Can i defrag the ssd drives or is it better not to because they are ssd?

You dont need to defrag SSDs because they dont really suffer slowdowns due to file fragmentation. Also its will reduce your SSDs life as it will write more than necessary to it.

Can? Yes.

Should? NO.

 

It is not recommended to defrag an SSD, because it's a lot of write operations, which impact the longevity of an SSD directly.

No real reason to defrag a ssd, random performance is very good, and the extra writes hurt the drive. But you can defrag them with some programs.

SSDs use an alternative thing called TRIM. It can be accessed from the same defrag menu in windows.

 

That said, it's not really necessary and I doubt you would see any tangible performance gains from doing it even if it was never done before.

Windows does have an automatic TRIM feature, that you can run on your own as well. It might provide a very small speed boost, but it's more about freeing up space.
