Does Crucial MX500 have an onboard DRAM? If so, the size?

Raym.

Unfortunately, the custom support has no idea what I am talking about. I ended up teaching the custom support for about 20 minutes and get no valuable information back. Could someone check it for me? No spec regarding dram from Crucial's website or manual. 2603d1f5b4b308fa5a2defa97a3436d.png.035d11d1c4156ebdd00cc866d0591a20.png6931ff2a562de4f60bfc8a7b2642420.png.bd216b939833e5a6c3cab2b15efb4f22.png

Yes it has dram. Size depends on the capacity, look at reviews.

But also there is much more to a ssd than if it has dram or not, so Id look at reviews if you are deciding what ssd to pick, not if it has dram or not.

It offers a 1GB SLC cache and a DRAM cache of 256MB. (1TB version)

Ah f*ck. Made a mistake.
DRAM cache. 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB or 2048MB depending on the size.

Aditionally it also offers an SLC cache.

"As usual for Crucial, the SLC write cache is dynamically sized based on how full the drive is."

https://www.anandtech.com/show/12263/the-crucial-mx500-500gb-review

Keep in mind that SLC cache and DRAM are two different things.

Thank you very much for fast response. I did checked some reviews and non of them talked about DRAM cache.

Most reviews like this one show the inside of the drive, so you can see the dram https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-mx500-ssd-review-nand,5390.html

Whats the system your putting the drive in, id probably go sn550 or low end nvme over a sata drive for a new build these days.

this depends on the capacity, the bigger drives have more dram.

Here's a handy SSD specs spreadsheet that can help with questions like this https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B27_j9NDPU3cNlj2HKcrfpJKHkOf-Oi1DbuuQva2gT4/edit?usp=sharing

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

This is what happens when you outsource support to people who just read off a script.

... But, to be fair you did ask "does it have a dram", which isn't a very clear way to ask what you wanted to know. It's not "a dram" as you were referring to it as, and I've never heard anyone refer to DRAM cache on an SSD as "a dram" before. You should have specified "DRAM cache"

If you ask Intel/AMD if their CPUs come with a graphics card included you'll likely get a different answer than if you ask if their CPUs have integrated graphics.

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

Eh, rubbish. Anyone working as support rep for company that makes SSD's and RAM sticks you shoudl instantly know what user is asking about. That's like asking a car mechanic about engine valves and he'd go on asking you if you mean heart valves or the piping valves? That's the level of stupid here.

I know companies are often faced with large volumes of pretty stupid questions, but having outsourced reps that are borderline clueless about the stuff they are "helping" with, it makes the whole situation pretty sad to a point I often rather search for solution on my own than be dealing with clueless support that hardly understands plain English.

  • 2 years later...

just a heads up, the most recent refresh that changed the nand type (to 176l TLC) for the 1TB and 2TB also cut the total dram cache to 512MB for all size tiers 1TB and above.

There has never been a 4TB iteration with 4GB of dram cache.
