Proper grounding method?

Me and my friend are having a dispute. I am about to do a partial build of my 5600x machine, just so I have less to do when my ram arrives.

I was going to ground myself on my psu housing, my friend said to unplug the PSU though, That makes no sense to me cause you want any discharge to travel out the power cable. 

With it unplugged I don't think you would get a discharge cause of the plastic/rubber case feet.

It should be connected, when it is not connected it is not (probably) grounded.

Your friend is wrong. The power supply should be powered off, and plugged in.

 

But the point is moot. I've been building PCs for over 10 years, have never had an issue, and have never grounded myself thusly. Occasionally touching the computer case or plugged in and powered off PSU is good enough.

Where does your think the electricity goes when the PSU is not connected? You connect it to the wall (and don't turn it on) so there is a path to ground.

If your PSU is not connected, then it "theoretically" has no way of grounding itself. If it is plugged in, then yes, it will go out through the grounding pin IF you have any charge in you. But by just standing on somewhere connected to the earth should be sufficient. Like a metal floor. But don't build on carpet. 
I think Jays2Cents did a video on this too at one point as well.

Your friend seems to be a special kind of person who is not too good with logical stuff...

If the PSU is not connected to anything, you're not "grounding" yourself to it.

The PSU needs to be plugged in. That being said, it's not essential. I've worked on hundreds of systems new and old and so far haven't had a single issue with static electricity.

Proper way would be to have the PSU plugged in.

If you are serious, your wrong ground is the rounded one.

I know the round one is grounded, but one of the 'prongs" is a neutral that connects to a ground in the main box.
