Oh.
AM3 then. LGA1155 didn't go beyond 6 core afaik, while an FX-8350 will get you 8 cores.

Not good cores, but more.

I've always seen those old i5s and i7s go for horribly overpriced money used. That being said, none of the AM3 chips were great^^

How much are they selling for used where you're at? Also, for those generations it can make sense to look at Xeon E3s (1230v2 f.e.), they're often a much better value because, well, they're not labeled i7^^

Did you buy it already?

If we're talking AM3 and not AM3+ there is no competition, Sandy Bridge hands down for all tasks. What does an i5-3570 or Xeon E3-1230V2 go for?

Edit: Just E3-1230 ofc, V2 is Ivy bridge, my bad

Why did you get a socket AM3 Athlon CPU?!

Those chips didn't have ANY L3 cache, so you'll take a pretty huge hit in performance.

A Phenom II X4 (e.g. 940 / 945 / 955 / 965 / 960T) will CRUSH a Athlon II X4 quad-core.

Phenom II X6 ... were, well... six-cores.

Price difference of $20 vs $15, the Phenom II X4 is BY FAR the better deal.

Also, a Phenom II X6 wouldn't be bad either for $40.

I needed the cash for the AM3+ mobo, Ill get a Phentom down the line. The Athlon was cheap and a decent option for Windows 10.

Get a Phenom X6 as soon as you can.

You'd be better off getting a Ryzen Athlon 200ge or 220ge and the base B450M series motherboard with the cheapest single stick of DDR4 8gb ram you can possibly find. This lowest of all Ryzen chips is about as fast as a Phenom II quad core. You can also overclock the 220 and 200ge on B450 boards. The A320 boards are appealing (cheap), but won't OC Ryzen chips.

Then you can buy a faster Ryzen chip later. A R5 1400, 1600 maybe.

But the AM3 platform is so bad, the slowest chip today is just as fast. If it where an FX-4300, the Ryzen Athlon 200ge would have it beat lol.

Food for thoughts.

Wat? Are you ok? Do you know that a fx8320 gets beaten by a i3 from that era in gaming?

No. What kinda bad advice is this. Those cpu's are terrible. Literally a i3 is better and those are trash for gaming nowadays.

Don't. Legit don't those cpu's legitimatly cannot run todays games anymore due to lacking instructions and they are terrible compared to same price i5's. You can get a dell mid tower with a i5 2400 for under 100$ and it will obliterate any phenom or fx for gaming.

Forgive my tired brain.

It just took 2 math-heavy tests and then sat through 2 boring lectures.
Ignore what I said.

Your core 2 machine is probably no joke as good if not better. I am not kidding here.

My Core 2 Machine cant even play modded 1.7.10 with 100 mods, HOWEVER Some old A8 from 2012 with a 7750 can run it fine as well as 1.16 and i dont need a OP machine to play a game like Fallout 3 or Half-Life 2 (NTM i needed drivers for XP (For Old 9X games), 10(Modren suport), and Linux (I use fredora).) I need a PC that has Legacy support but modren software runs on it. The Core 2 Dies in All of my games but Garrys mod and even THAT is kinda laggy. Drivers on the mobo i have dont use 10 or 8.1 BUT i have to use compadibliy mode to use them on 8.1. Im sorry if i was harsh but i need a better PC.

Needed to add more stuff.

if u need to buy a board anyways then get AM4, there are really cheap ryzen chips that would still be better than AM3 - need new RAM too though then.

Get a used Optiplex 390 or 790 Mini Tower motherboard. They can be had for as little as $15-20 in working condition on eBay, and they are LGA 1155. Grab an i7-2600 for $65-75, and you've got a 4C/8T CPU with a motherboard that can be installed into any case you want for under $100. If money's really tight, the i5-2500 is an option for under $30, but you're at 4 cores/4 threads there, and that's going to limit you.

IMO, avoid AM3+. The CPUs might have 8 cores, but an AM3+ motherboard is going to cost you more, the CPUs are going to cost you more, and the FX-8300 won't be as fast as the i7-2600 IIRC.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.
