CPU upgrade: 5600x enough?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to build a new PC, primarily for gaming, which I can hopefully keep for at least a couple of years. I have been looking at the AMD 5000-series CPUs. Do you think a 5600x(6C/12T) is enough? I would like to be able to use discord or watch a video on my second monitor without it affecting my games too much.

I'm currently on a 7600k (4C/4T). I seem to be CPU bound on some games e.g. Warzone. The game runs decently, but people on discord can not hear me as soon as we join a game. I figured this was because of warzone hugging all of my CPUs resources, right?

Also, I know games usually don't utilize a lot of cores, but I would imagine as time passes, more games will be able to utilize more cores?

The 5600x would be a good option.

I will recommend an NHu12s (or an NHd15 (maybe)) for your PC build. Quote or @ me @Prodigy_Smit for me to see your replies.

i think you have other issues since i am running a i7-2700k in warzone and also maxing it out more or less but i have no issue with warzone and discord together.

but yeah a 5600x is very nice CPU that is good for gaming,

possibly, you can always set discord to high priority in task manager

no need for upgrade if you're still happy with your performance

5600X would be perfect. You can get a 5800X as well if you think you need it too though.

5600X = 6C/12T

5800X = 8C/16T

Thanks,

With the 5800x I just considered its price to be weird.  For 150$  you get 2 more cores, but then for a 100$ more just can actually double the cores and get 12. Seems like the cost per core with 5800x is not as good.

A 2700k has 4 more threads though, but I'm unsure as to how much threads matter.

But the cost per frame is much better than the 5900X, and only slightly worse than the 5600X. Its overall performance is just slightly above halfway between the 5600X and 5900X, and in games that can't use more than 16 threads, that performance is almost identical to the 5900X. (making it a MUCH better value in that situation)

Cost per core is effectively worthless unless your only use of the system requires a specific number of threads to work, and is entirely unaffected by core performance.

What?

The 2700K is very old cpu.. I think if he jump to 5600X it is a huge upgrade.. you dont think so?

for the system performance..

Op have a 7600k

While 4c/4t CPU is a bit lacking these days, as long as OP is fine with it then he doesn't have to upgrade it yet

I proposed a potential solution to his reason to upgrade, if he still wants to go ahead then sure, it is definitely a significant upgrade, if his tasks are limited by his CPU (which it probably is)

Yeah just to clarify i am wondering that the 7600k can struggle while my old fucker still manages so priority for discord would be a good idea.

That beeing said a 5600x would be a big upgrade.

but listen to this post :)

It highly depends on the framerate being pushed

OP may be pursuing higher frame rates which is very CPU bound

thats true and i did also tweak a bit ,actually ended up setting my graphic settings a bit higher to make the GPU cap out before CPU.

.

for gaming only, ocing a 5600x to 4.7-4.8 for a cool 300usd (whenever it's in stock) is the best option atm, but there will be cases where 6/12 isn't enough at 1080p/1440p, think shooters/cyberpunk etc at higher refresh rates. 90% of the time it's the fastest gaming cpu...for 300usd. Unless you are getting a 6800xt/3080 or above, then i recommend the 5600x and putting more money toward the gpu.

The reason the price seems off is that the 5800x/5950x needs a perfect CCD (all 8 cores have to work up to spec) where the 5600x and 5900x can both use CCDs that have up to 2 cores that do not meet spec.  That is why the cost per core is not really in favor for the 5800x, for every 2 5800x made 1 5950x with much better margins could have been made instead.
