WHY my gpu keeps overheating?

SAVE-12-HK

msi gtx970 gaming X

temp over 85C+, and throttle

fan curve auto 95%

open case

reapplied thermal paste multiple times, spread looks fine...?

core volt +0

the temp increase rapidly under load, and drop fast too at ease

auto 95% or 95%? lol. Check tachometer in msi afterburner. Maybe the fans are defective and aren't spinning at 95% speeds

over 85C it drops clock a lot , so i set temp limit to 85C ( max 91C)

If the fans work correctly just poor cooler I guess, made worse by lack of case airflow since you have it open.

i opened case to get rid of case fan factor, and temp spiked to 85C like un 10 sec

btw msi gaming was one of the best cooler at that batch

Your results are definitely strange. If you set the fan speed to 100% manually and run furmark what does the temp settle at? And what is your ambient temp?

Just get a new GPU already its old, let it rest in peace.

Something is wrong for sure, it should run much cooler than that. Maybe the screws for the heatsink aren't tight enough?

That looks like an MSI cooler.

I'd contact MSI and see if they can give you the torque specs for the cooler on your GPU.

Looking around a bit 0.4nm-0.5nm or about 5inch pounds seems common for other GPU coolers

Well it being msi designed is one issue.
But should still be able to sit lower at fan speed of 95%+.

Hows it look in said case with the panel off?

That’s prolly because it was designed for it. And they used the same coolers for higher tier stuff. Which all have poor cooling.

So if it is the best and the air flow isn’t an issue, then there’s no problem.

At the time, reviews showed the GTX 970 Gaming topping out in the mid to low 60's (~24*C ambient).

Compared to ASUS STriX and EVGA ACX in the 70*C+ range.

@SAVE-12-HKI would check the GPU cooler mounting pressure.

Did any of the 4x mounting screws get stripped (threads) ?

Does your version of the MSi GX 970 Gaming have a backplate?

If it does, I'd check to see if that is loose or not, too.

There’s not really an easy way to check it unfortunately. Do any of the heat pipes have damage/cracks/holes? Maybe the liquid escaped from them.

That's also true.

If (one of) the heatpipes are cracked / punctured, and the low-boiling point fluid leaked out, cooling performance will take a hit.

It’s gonna be hot regardless. But wouldn’t function as intended if cracked.
But hopefully there would evidence of that somewhere if that happened.
