IPS vs VA panels for gaming and general use

So I have a buddy with a TUF VG27AQ IPS 165hz and a TUF VG32VQ VA 144hz monitor. 

I tried pubg on both monitors and when trying the VA panel I found the experience lackluster to say the least. 

As an example I put some ammo on the ground and if I moved around it would almost look like the ammo on the ground bled. 

Also had some issue running around. 

 

While the IPS panel didn't have as bright screen it didn't bleed like the VA panel. 

 

So from my point of view I don't understand how people would recommend VA over IPS for gaming especially now that the input lag has come down for the IPS panels. 

 

Do anyone have a different point of view? Was it only because of the 2 monitors that I tested? Would the curved screen on the 32" VA panel have something to do with it?

 

This was more made for discussion about monitors for different uses and peoples experiences with different panel types :)

VA is cheaper usually, has much better contrast, and isn't plagued by backlight bleed and colorshift of high end IPS monitors. The "bleeding" you saw is just ghosting. That's the largest drawback to VA panels at the moment. Personally I would take a little ghosting for better contrast and no colorshfiting. Every highend gaming IPS panel I have used in the past has always had issues with colorshift where whites would appear yellowish and at night the corners would have terrible bleed.

Just keeping this here as a I guess that is more to what you prefer, for me I could not live with the ghosting. I look at some movies on the monitor and it was way better imo.

There will always be some personal preference with this. But I personally cannot use VA or TN for anything besides gaming. And even then I prefer IPS.

 

My two main displays are both IPS and I would never change that. Gaming is nowhere near my main use, although I do have a Asus PG348Q (100Hz IPS G-Sync) but the color accuracy, saturation, and viewing angles are my priorities. And in my experience I have never had significant color shift issues or light bleed from the monitor edges with an IPS panel. Light bleed is a common VA issue, especially cheaper panels. So unless you want to chase the lowest possible pixel latency IPS IMO is just better.

 

I am looking for a replacement monitor though, but what I want just does not yet exist.

I was thinkin while looking at a movie on the 2 screens that maybe the brightness is almost a placebo effect. And that normal use an IPS display would be better normally.

 Overdrive, fps, free sync and refresh rate can be tuned to reduce ghosting on free sync va panels.

 

Higher res and pixel density doesn't look as bad.

That could very well be, for viewing content (like a movie) IPS is miles better (IMO).

Sounds like your friend doesn't have the overdrive set to the correct setting or you were only moving around in dark areas. While the VG32VQ doesn't have the perfect motion handling, it shouldn't be as bad as what you described, as shown in the attached image.

Really IPS all the way though. It's just better, while VA is a cheaper alternative. The only VA I'd ever even consider is new Samsung's Odyssey though. But it's curved. Still IPS a better choice.
