CPU and Motherboard compatibility

Okay, so I'm planning on upgrading my CPU. However, my motherboard is on the older side, it being the Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming 3. It does have an AM4 though.

 

So, what I want to know is, what CPUs would work on it? Can I just get any AM4 CPU, such as a Ryzen 9 3950X? Or do cerain newer CPUs require newer mobos, even if they are AM4?

Mobo: Gigabyte B450 Aorus Elite V2

GPU: XFX Radeon RX 6800 SWFT 319

RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO (4x8 3200MHz)

Storage: Patriot P300 128GB, XPG SPECTRIX S40G 1TB, WD HDD 1TB

Cooler: Corsair iCUE H150i RGB ELITE

PSU: Corsair RMx 750W 80 Plus Gold

Case: Corsair 4000D

 

Monitor: AOC Q27G2S

with a bios update you cvan put first,second and third gen ryzen there. that motherboard is not good.

 

so ryzen 5 3600 is max cpu i would put on that motherboard.

Motherboard tier list. Tier A for overclocking 5950x. Tier B for overclocking 5900x, Tier C for overclocking 5800X. Tier D for overclocking 5600X. Tier F for 4/6 core Cpus at stock. Tier E avoid.

(Also case airflow matter or if you are using Downcraft air cooler)

300 series boards can support up to Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000 cpu's, though 3000 apu's are zen+) with a beta bios, so techincally you can put a 3950x in there with a bios update, the gaming 3 doesn't necessarily have a good vrm, it's a 4 phase with 4 4C010N and 8 4C06N and a subpart looking heatsink, so while yes you techincally can put a 16 core in there, the board may struggle with powering it. 

But generally, 300 series boards support up to zen 2 cpu's with a beta bios. 

400 series boards can support up to zen 3 with a beta bios.

B550 supports zen 2 and can zen 3. 

x570 supports zen+ and 2 and can support zen 3.

Ryzen 4000 Zen 3 Desktop CPU Compatibility Only With X570 & B550, not 400  or lower

B350 works with Ryzen 1000, Ryzen 2000 and the Ryzen 3200G and 3400G officially

 

Looks like Gigabyte does have compatability built in for Ryzen 3000 otherwise though: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-AB350-Gaming-3-rev-1x/support#support-cpu

Not that you would want to run a 3950X on this motherboard, I would really only suggest up to a Ryzen 5/7 CPU.

It should handle a 3700x just fine.

i would go max 3700x on stock.

why exactly do you need a 3950x? are you doing lots of cpu intensive works? 

for gaming and light editing, a 3600 is enough
