Need help with advanced F@H settings

So, with folding month going on, of course I want to fold as much as possible.

Unfortunately, my CPU (R5 3600) doesn't want to cooperate - on Medium settings, temps are getting near 90C, and my case fans are really loud. (I have a better CPU cooler in the mail, but for now I'm on the stock cooler.) When I set the slider to light, temps (and volumes) are much more reasonable. However, on light, the GPU only folds on idle; since I'm not using my GPU heavily (using Chrome mostly) it seems like I'm wasting my GPU's power.

Is there any way to tweak settings so that CPU can be on Light, but GPU still folds all the time?

Try settings some less CPU threads to fold on.

Go to Configure > Slots > CPU > edit (bottom right) > and change 'CPU's' to another number.

I would recommend 10 at the very most, but maybe a lower number.

Your CPU has 12 threads and you want to keep at least 1 thread free for the client and 1 thread per videocard. So 2 free in your case (with a single 1650 Super).

Of course having less CPU thread busy at once will lower the temps too, so that might help with it as well.

I am not aware of being able to set the CPU to 'Light' folding, but limiting the amount of threads used might be the second best thing.

The "light" setting is found on the web browser. The method you described (and beat me to saying) is found in the Advanced Client, which is in the System tray in Windows (bottom right, hit the ^ icon)

Ah yes, I meant I wasn't aware of only setting the CPU to low, while leaving the GPU on medium/full.

The light setting is also found in the advanced control, the slider at the top. I had assumed OP used that already, since the GPU shows an "Idle" message when setting that to Low.

But OP may still be using the web browser.. In which case, yes the advanced control panel is much better! (I usually just tell people to look for "FAHControl" in Windows search :P)

Thanks for clarifying what I said, indeed use Advanced Control to configure the slots!

Thanks so much! I had thought about doing this (I had poked around at the advanced control a little bit) but wanted to see if there was a better way. I've got it set now to Full power, so the GPU is going strong, with the CPU limited to 6 threads and coming out around 80C. I'll experiment with adding one thread at a time and see what happens, but I don't really want to go above 80 for long periods of time.

I found the 3600x pairs nicely with the Wraith Prism from a R7 or R9 CPU or even a Hyper 212 EVO compared to the stock cooler keeps the CPU much cooler. Allowed me to run all threads on BOINC or F@H and kept the temperatures below 80C.

You'll probably notice when you play with the thread count that F@H doesn't like thread counts that are prime numbers or multiple of primes. 3 & 5 are not considered primes but 7, 11 & 13 are and the logs will show that when set to these values the client will drop the thread count by 1.

I have a 3600 and tend to be on 6 threads while working and 4 while on a video call, even though 6 is generally ok. I can push it up to 8 if I don't mind it getting a little hotter. I have an arctic freezer 34 duo, which I find pretty good.
