Is Molex 4 pin to PCIE 6 pin safe?

biobreaker

As title shows. I've tried to search in forum but I did not find a clear conclusion. My Tacens PSU is rated Silver at 750 W with 2 6+2 PCIE and 4 Molex, wondering if I can use it to run a 1080 ti with 8 pin+ 6 pin

Why can't you run the two 6+2 pin connectors as a 8 pin and then a six pin? Unless you made a typo I don't see your issue.

Fuck you scalpers, fuck you scammers, fuck all of you jerks that charge way too much to tech-illiterate people.

Unless I say I am speaking from experience or can confirm my expertise, assume it is an educated guess.

Current setup: Ryzen 5 3600, MSI MPG B550, 2x8GB DDR4-3200, RX 5600 XT (+120 core, +320 Mem), 1TB WD SN550, 1TB Team MP33, 2TB Seagate Barracuda Compute, 500GB Samsung 860 Evo, Corsair 4000D Airflow, 650W 80+ Gold. Razer peripherals.

Also have a Alienware Alpha R1: i3-4170T, GTX 860M (≈ a 750 Ti). 2x4GB DDR3L-1600, Crucial MX500

You can run them with one 8 pin and one 6 pin. By as you have 2x6+2 pin connectors. You just don't connect the 2 extra pins on one of the 6 +2

I would think about getting rid of that PSU and not running a high end graphics card off it period regardless.

You are putting your GPU and system at risk.

The PSU is extremely low quality.

My PSU is a Tacens Mars Gaming Vulcano 750W 80 Plus Silver Semi Modular. Back in the day I'd think being rated over 80 Plus Bronze would be enough for safety.

thing is, it has only 2 6+2 PCIE connectors, no 8 pin PCIE but 4 Molex. So it would be a good idea to use the 2 Molex as 6 pin PCIE or better to outright get a new one?

6+2 are the 8 Pins.

Efficiency rating has northing to do with quality.

Yup, but no sources.
The only source available is a review in spanish about the Radix VII 700w version, which mentiones that the 12V rail isn't "very powerful" and that there's a slight voltage drop at the 12V rail.

I still call bs on the PSU tier list.

Efficiency rating should not be used as an indication for an unit quality. In fact, a good quality 750w typically have at least four 6/8pin PEG connectors. Hell, when I still had it, my Kingwin LZP-550 had four of them.

6+2 pin PEG can function as both a 6-pin or an 8-pin. However, I recommend getting a different power supply. Tacens has a history of doing the switch and bait, where they take one unit, send it to Ecova to have it tested for 80 Plus certification, got a 80 Plus Silver rating, and then sold a completely different unit made by a different OEM while still using that Silver badge.

No real reviews such as real tear downs and tested with the proper testing equipment is a red flag at best.

Just unboxing videos and reviews if you can call those reviews, not real tests done.... Professional testing.

I wouldn't use one to power more than an LED light.

Your current PSU has the proper fittings.  Use one of the 6+2 (total of 8 pins) and use the other 6 minus 2 (they click together and not together) pin.

The PSU will be fine, until it isnt.  Not that the tier list is bad, its amazing, but I also buy and use Tier A and garbo PSU's - and aint a one of either ever "taken out components" with it in my case.  Let it rip, it will either work or not.  Right now sitting on my desk is an Apevia Captain just arrived - about to throw it into an FX 8350 and R9 Fury system and push it to the limits because ...it either will be fine or wont work.

Thanks everyone for your kind replies. I still have the doubt that while the 6+2 pin connectors could fit the 8 pin, the notches seemed a little bit different. That's why I was scared to use them.

However, since the PSU doesn't seem to be up to spec (my current system doesn't use a lot of power) I decided to check for another one. Wattage would be around  462 W accounting for the 1080ti+ my old parts. 2 different web sources suggested using a ~550 W PSU, the usual spec for that card the vendor says it's 600 W.

Do you know of any respectable and affordable unit that can run either at 550 or 600 W?

Just note - any online PSU calculator is garbage.  But on my main systems I run 750w plus because I dont want any issues, so no reason not to go higher than enough (which is what PSU calculators are always doing).

By different do you mean some are squares, and some are half square half octagon shape?  This is normal.  The keyways of squares will fit both square and not square.  Its the fitting of a square into a not square that wont work.  Your PSU is meant to put 2x PCIe power connectors in btw, it has both cables :)

Say 462w is accurate that's 85% load on a 550W PSU.... Best case..... And I don't recommend going over 65% to 70% or so load on a PSU...

I would recommend going with a high quality 650W PSU so you have some room for upgrades in the future. Unless you want to by another PSU next time you upgrade etc, buying 2 PSUs instead of one.

Look at the Tier List and pick from Tier A or B...

The 1080Ti is a high end GPU so....

It's a bait and switch. This mean they initially send a PSU that can do full 100-240V input range, but the retail model is a different unit from what they had tested. The MPVU750 is a 200-240V PSU, but it is listed in 115V internal on 2012. Ecova only tested desktop PSUs at 115V back then. It wasn't until 2014 that the 230V EU certification started.

Got it.

Could the retail model still be the same model, just listed as a 200-240v unit or are there preventive mesaures against that?

You would think if someone was doing supposed PSU reviews etc they would actually have the PSU in hand and take some photos....

I don't do hardware reviews anymore and haven't for a very long time now..... Maybe I am just getting old and not used to the new way of doing it.. Just writing some text and using the stock photo from the company. Don't even need a PSU to do that....

Do you mean specifically no 700w unit? Because he said 750w.

Edit:
There is a 750w Tacens Mars listed. (MPVU750)

https://www.plugloadsolutions.com/80PlusPowerSuppliesDetail.aspx?id=210&type=2

There is also a MPV750, which isn't listed.

You are correct.  When I Googled Tacens Mars Vulcano, only a 700W came up.

But there is a 750W.  It is identical to the "Zeus" 750W.  And it's still a DF/group regulated unit from Andyson.

I looked at the 80+ website and found the model numbers etc, but couldn't find any legit reviews.

Andyson, heard that name before a number of times...... Nothing positive from what I remember.
