RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 on 2K 144 Hz - Bottle Neck?

I have a 144 Hz 2K panel and was planing on upgrading to either a 3080 or 3090. Will I be bottle-necked by my display, meaning that in the latest AAA games I will be locked at 144 Hz while playing games, the 3080 or 3090 would be able to push more than 144 frames per second at 2k, but i would be limited to 144 Hz because of my display at 2k. I want to play at the maximum graphical settings with ray tracing on ultra on my display.

 

I feel like my display would be a bottle neck and I should upgrade to a 4k display. But 144 Hz 4k panels with gsync or nearly $1,000, and I don't want to spend $1,000 on a display in addition to my graphics card. I play on keeping my video card for a generation only, and selling it right before the 4000 series comes out so I can get the most money back. So I'm not worried about the longevity of the 3080 to 3090. Meaning In know probably in 5 to 6 years the 3090 may struggle at 2k resolution 144 Hz as the latest AAA games will have more polygons on the screen that require unique colored pixels, or maybe ray tracing becomes more taxing. So I'm thinking for the next 2 years or so only.

Welp, if we are looking into the future then you can assume in near future your monitor may be the least performant hardware in the system as a whole, but I wouldn't call it a bottleneck.  Now if we are looking into the distant future where games become harder to run on older hardware then your monitor won't be the least performant piece of hardware in the system.  

 

If you're thinking of going for more resolution then do that with a nice big TV at 4k 120Hz.  That'll be fun to game on.

My question is:  What does it matter?

 

If a game can do 165Hz with a 3080, how different is this than 144Hz to you?   Are you simply freaking out about not getting 100% of everything out of your gear?  Is that anxiety inducing?

 

If so, then yes... upgrade your monitor.

 

If not, then just enough 1440p 144Hz and rock it out.

1440p 144hz is fine with everything maxed out, the 3090 isn't good enough for 4k/144hz.

 

The more prominent bottleneck will be the cpu, some games just won't run at 144hz, and i'm hoping zen 3 will provide even a small improvement over current cpus.

this doesnt make sense. Would you say getting buff is useless for someone who works by sitting in front of computer? Just because you have a high end graphics card doesnt mean everything else must be high end.

I would wait for benchmarks, but I'd bet money that 3080 is utter overkill for 1440p.

If you're talking about bottlenecks, it's absolutely pointless unless you're going to tell us what your entire system is.

There are likely bottlenecks in other parts of your system that are going to be more severe than you not getting the most out of your video card because you're resolution capped. Even then, you'll always have a bottleneck somewhere. Worrying about it is kind of pointless. Just enjoy your system if you're maxing out your monitor.

 

If you go with the 3090, you'd definitely want something like a 1440p monitor or an ultrawide. Why would you spend $1.5k on a graphics card, and not invest into the part of the system you interact with during every single use? That makes no sense. If anything the display should be what you invest in the most.

 

On top of that what do you mean by 2k? 2k isn't a resolution.

100% agree.  Buy what makes the EXPERIENCE better.  

 

I did, hence the $850 monitor.

 

What's going to suck is when you buy the 4k 144Hz monitor and only get 125Hz.  I would be PISSED!!!!

Exactly. Not only that, but monitors can last several builds if you get a good one.

I was joking.  If the concern for buying a new monitor is not maxxing a GPU, then the reverse may be true.  Like you had said, there is always a bottleneck (stupid ass term) and something is going to utilized less than 100%.

 

You just have to be learn which parts you can live with not being fully utilized. 

 

I think the OP is being a little TOO sensitive to the concept.  But if a new monitor lowers his anxiety then by all means go for it.  Cheaper than a shrink

1. Why would you pair a RTX 3080 or 3090 with 1080p monitor?
2. Monitor will not limit your FPS unless you choose to do so via settings (i.e. VSync).

1440p 144Hz, I'd get a 3080 vs a 3090.

 

3090 is a special case.  If you go 3090 I expect you to have a 10900K OC'd, at least 32GB 4000 RAM, 2-4TB SSD action, etc.  AND be needing to access all 24GB of VRAM.

 

Do NOT overdramaticize 1 aspect of your PC like that. Balance, regardless of price.

Then go with the RTX 3080. 

P.S. 2k monitor means monitor with roughly 2000 horizontal pixels, 16:9 ratio 1080p monitor has 1920 horizontal pixels, thus it's an actual 2k monitor. Marketing dumbasses were looking for a fancy way of marketing 1440p monitors and they came up with name "2k" that has literally no meaning.
