I would like to ask a question regarding ethernet specifically in laptops.

Is the ethernet in laptops tied to the wifi card? (if i upgrade the wifi card does that upgrade the ethernet?)

PC: Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB 3200mhz RAM (8GBx2), Gigabyte B550M DS3H, GTX 1050 2GB, 650W Semi-Modular PSU80+ Gold

Phone: Poco F3 8GB + 256GB

Audio: Samson SR850s

Sound Card: SoundBlaster Play 4 USB sound card

IEM: planning to get the KBEAR KS2s
Please be patient with me, I'm fatally dumb and its honestly a miracle I've made it this far

No, they are independent. You cannot "upgrade" the ethernet in a laptop.

The only way to improve your laptop Ethernet is to use an Ethernet to USB 3.x dongle that supports higher speeds.

Soo a dongle that has ethernet?

Yes. They cost like $7 or less, like e.g. here's a link to one of eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/USB3-0-to-10-100-1000-Mbps-Gigabit-RJ45-Ethernet-LAN-Network-Adapter-G0C3/114294364817

what's the problem with your current ethernet?

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

Unless you got very fast speed tour internet connection will most likely be bottleneck before the ethernet.

In english, you don't need an ethernet dongle.

In real life, I act like I know less about tech than I actually do.

Main build: CPU: AMD Phenom ii X4 955 Black Edition @ 4,0GHz (Cooler Master 212) | GPU: MSI RX580 8Gb | RAM: 12Gb DDR3 | PSU: Chieftec CTB-500S  | Mobo: Asus M4A87TD/USB3 | Storage: Seagate 500Gb HDD

Yes, I'm aware my CPU is a huge bottleneck. No, I don't really care.

No, it will test the connection between your modem/router to Ooklas servers. Your internal network speed makes zero difference to this.

If its a 9 year old laptop then it will be a 100base NIC which will give you somewhere around 10MBps.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

You will see a boost if you have a USB 3.0 port for that USB Ethernet adapter and the onboard ethernet is 100 mbps fast ethernet rather than Gigabit ethernet. Which was common up until the Sandy/Ivy Bridge days.

What?! This is 100% wrong! Of course your LAN-bandwidth matters, like e.g. if your Internet-connection was gigabit, but your LAN was running only at 100Mbps, the maximum Speedtest could give you is 100Mbps!

What laptop do you have? Does it only have a 10/100 Ethernet or does it have a gigabit Ethernet? If it has gigabit Ethernet, then a dongle would be useless. If it does have a 10/100 Ethernet, then yes, a dongle would be an improvement. Do note, however, that that does not necessarily make your Internet-connection faster: that depends on the rest of your network and the contract you have with your ISP.

That laptop already has gigabit Ethernet, you're not going to get any benefit from a USB-dongle.
