C Drive Full

Go to solution Solved by Windows7ge,

I would look at the properties of both C:/Windows & C:/Program Files (x86). If the Windows folder reports really high usage then it's just Windows being a hog. If Program Files (x86) or Program Files reports high utilization then an application is likely hogging all the storage.

If neither report high utilization then you can check your Downloads folder. A common data hording folder. Beyond that we would dig deeper like into %appdata%.

Hey Guys, so my PC's C Drive is full and i have no idea why

i've had a look on the Microsoft storage thing and cant really see any large files on the C drive.

The biggest thing i can see is Davinci resolve and  thats  only 2GB. whats happened to all my space?

ive uploaded some images of whats in my C drive, i store my games on my D and E drives so its not them.

ive tried deleting things in my recycling bin, scanning for a virus, using storage sense all to no avail. i wanted to play a game which steam needs to update ( Total war war hammer 2), but it cant update as there isn't enough space on C drive? Any ideas please?

Use disk-cleanup, like e.g. in Explorer, right-click the C:-drive -> Properties -> Cleanup -> Clean system files and from there select to clean up Windows Update, old Windows-installations etc. That'll most likely free up quite a bit of space.

Check out WinDirStat. https://windirstat.net/

It lets you visually see what's taking up the majority of your space. Check TEMP files. 110GB is pretty much the bare minimum for a windows installation/directory. You're likely to continue filling up space on that drive until you are able to buy at least a 240-250GB drive to install windows on.

So it looks like I was on the right path. It would seem Steam is hogging most of your available storage.

Do you have the money for a bigger SSD? Consumer SATA SSDs are pretty inexpensive nowadays.

Yeah thats what it says on Windirstat, i didnt download the game on my c drive however i installed it on my D drive so im not sure why its update is hugging so much space? I can buy a new SSD perhaps a 250GB one, but thats a long winded solution, haha. i have to wait at least a week to play.

There must be a better way. i have 120 GB SSD installed.

Can you go into Steam and see how much space each game is taking up on C:/? Just because they're installed on D:/ doesn't necessarily mean some game files don't still install on C:/.

Spoiler

You could try installing steam on some other drive, not your system one, that way all the files should go into that drive and not the system drive.

Man so i think im getting somewhere, i didnt know this was a thing but apparently updating war hammer 2 requires a temporary space of about 35GB! WTH so i think i can solve this by uninstalling and reinstalling the game?

So it looks like the games take up space on C:/ then get moved to D:/ before presumably freeing up the space it used on C:/ to download & decompress the files.

That's a theory.

Yeah this might work, would i just need to delete steam and reinstall to a new Location?

Yeah a 120GB/128GB SSD in 2020 for a Windows PC gamer is really tight. If you had to give yourself a budget for an SSD upgrade how much do you think you could put towards it without going bankrupt?

Yep. Saw that coming. It's possible Steam might have a setting where you could force the game temp setup files to D:/. I would have no idea where to find such setting though.

Im looking at some 250 GB ones now for about 50 pounds (UK)

that sounds ok, should be fun copying files over too as i love getting my hands dirty with PC's.

I built this PC in 2016 when SSD's were still kind of expensive they seem a lot cheaper now.

Yeah Most likely. im just going to reinstall the game back onto my D drive, that way every file should be freshly downloaded and no need for the huge update :P.

I think that's the best option for now :)

hopefully it works

They have come down in cost a lot. I remember my first SSD. It was a Corsair Force 3 (I think) 120GB. Cost me like >$100. Today you could buy a 1TB for the same price.
