Microphone acting like StereoMix

A friend of mine has a problem with his audio devices. I was talking to him on TeamSpeak when I found that I could hear myself. I asked and he was using his headset.

Now his mic is acting like a stereo mix channel, allowing me to hear all the sounds he can from his PC (including myself) as well as his mic.

His MB is an Asus M5A97 R2.0 with Realtek onboard audio. He has his headset in and out plugged into the front ports and StereoMix is disabled in sound devices.

As Google hasn't been able to help me, I would greatly appreciate some assistance from the LTT community :)

Haha, nice suggestion, but no. It's definitely merging the stereo mix into the mic channel.

Common problem with headsets - multiple points of failure for feedback between the two channels due to poor quality circuits. RMA or replace.

Definitely not, he tested it with just the microphone of the headset connected with a seperate pair of headphones.

Edit: It's a Corsair Vengeance 1400. I know they're not infallible, but I wouldn't have thought that feedback is a "common problem with headsets".

Does that mean the microphone IS picking up noise from other headphones, pot IS NOT?

The mic isn't picking up sound from the other headphones. It is an internal problem with the audio settings, I just don't know what.

nonononono...

If the mic is not pickling up sound from the other headphones, that means it is a problem with the headset.

Aplogies, I thought you meant physically from the mic. It is sill picking up the StereoMix when the other headphones are plugged in, so it isn't faulty wiring in the headset.

Okay, has he tried other audio ports on the PC?

He has not, I will ask him to.

He isn't around now, assuming that other audio ports are the same, could you offer any other suggestions?

I'm guessing its some kind of software he has installed doing it.
