R9 290 Crossfire vs 780 Ti

Huginn
Go to solution Solved by Kuzma,

Oh and two 290s, in games that don't support Crossfire you'll perform very close to a 780Ti and in games that support Crossfire you'll curb stomp it.

Title says it all. For the upcoming 5 years, am I better of buying 2 R9 290's in crossfire, or with a single GTX 780 Ti. The computer will be used for gaming. I play everything from League to Titanfall (which was surprisingly fun fyi).

The prices around here are about the same. I can roughly get 2x R9 290's for the price of one 780 Ti.

Tried googling some benchmarks but couldn't find the comparison.

That bs. He can get 2x 290's for the price of a single 780ti...  Get the r9 290's. (IF THE ARE AFTERMARKET!)

NO.

Crossfire is better with the reference cooler.

didnt see that......... :o  :(

As much as I would hate to say it 2x 290s would be better for gaming now and down the road. Although if heat and sound are a concern then go with dual 780's.

Well 2 780s might crush the idea of upgradeability and might go over his budget.

Blower design cards are always better for crossfire.

On the prices: I said roughly the same. I'm comparing a eVGA 780 Ti to 2x MSI R9 290. The 780 Ti would cost me €690, the 2 290's €760. So it's about a €70 difference.

Heat and sound aren't really a concern. Ambient room temperature never goes above 23°C in a hot summer. And I might end up watercooling the whole thing.

Well 2 780s might crush the idea of upgradeability and might go over his budget.

Indeed, €1400 for GPU is too much for me.

Are you sure you looked at 290's and not 290X's? Their performance is (near to) equal but prices are different. A LOT.

how is any of this upgradeability really even relevant? You buy 2 290's and you're set for few years, you buy 2 780's and you're set for a few years. You buy one 780 ti and you still have to buy another one to set for a for years, so yes you can "upgrade" but for even more money. You could buy one 290 now and wait but thats not the question the OP is asking.

94 degrees* Powertune will Overclock or Downclock the 290 until it reaches that temperature, as a 290 user that's tried running the fan on the unbearable speed of 100% to see if it made a difference to the temperatures, it will not.

EDIT: Until you have hands on experience with the 290 please don't advise against it because of "temps". It's actually quite nice having a hot GPU with a cold room as opposed to the other way around since the heat is not dissipated into the environment.

Hm. I was thinking that they would heat eacher other up to 100 Celsus. (Reminds me of the Fermi.) Also still 2x aftermarket will run cooler than 94 Celius while being more quiet.

Whilst in crossfire? If you provide me with some evidence I'll happily accept being wrong :P and the 290 WILL NOT hit 100 degrees Celsius it will downclock itself before it hits that, 94 degrees is it's max.
