R9 290 Crossfire vs 780 Ti

Huginn
Go to solution Solved by Kuzma,

Oh and two 290s, in games that don't support Crossfire you'll perform very close to a 780Ti and in games that support Crossfire you'll curb stomp it.

Blower design cards are always better for crossfire.

If the R9 29x cards didn't run SO hot and SO loud, this would be true.

The best solution would probably be something like the HIS ICEq blower design, but that's not available for the R9 series.

Whilst in crossfire? If you provide me with some evidence I'll happily accept being wrong :P and the 290 WILL NOT hit 100 degrees Celsius it will downclock itself before it hits that, 94 degrees is it's max.

It all depend on the spacing of the cards, normally blower style coolers work better than aftermarket when the card are sandwiched, with a space in between, aftermarket is better. it all depends on the OPs motherboard.

True but in 75% off scenarios blower is going to be better for crossfire, especially since the OP could potentially get a third 290 if he needed the power within 5 years.

Upgradeable! Also we're kinda all talking on air until someone pulls up some benchmarks which I cbb to do for once since I'm going to sleep soon.

I don't know if this is any good but http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/content/5/9/5991_50_sapphire_radeon_r9_290_4gb_in_crossfire_video_card_review.png

It's a big list but it shows the different models, right?

And it confirms the Reference cards to run cooler than the custom cards .

The VRM is a completely difference thing to the actual GPU chip itself, I hope you do know that...

Oh and that's for a 4870...

IK there are 2 charts, one for VRM and one for chip.

But the VRM's are cooler with blower, but chip is cooler with aftermarket.

I have an R9 290 and I'd recommend it a single 290 over a 780ti.

Also, my 290 runs at <70C @1123 core with arctic accelero 3 (4 is coming out soon).

No. May be outdated, but it is the exact same concept of heat and such. No differance. For 2 cards, aftermarket will be better for core chip temps, and probably VRM too, its just that this aftermarket one didint have good vrm cooling.

So, I'm gonna sum this up. Get the 290's, heat may or may not be a problem but good case ventilation/watercooling can solve this. If not watercooling, stock coolers give lower temperatures according to the chart I found.

It really depends on where one is from, for example, in my neck of the woods, two reference R9 290's cost about 1200 (local currency, which is about 1000USD). A typical GTX780 Ti cost about 1050 local currency, which puts it at about 875USD, so for me, paying an extra 125USD for two powerful cards beats paying a tad less for one powerful card. For a little more than the price of a GTX Titan Black, I can get two R9 290X.....really, it boils down to location, location, location! :D

In the UK one 290 costs ~£305 and a 780Ti costs around £500-600.

Getting the R9 290's. Thanks for the many responses and feedback. And just to be sure, I won't get bottlenecked by my mobo choice?

I'm getting the parts from the Netherlands. A Titan would set me back for €1000, since we're comparing prices.

Running my 290 off of an x58 motherboard with PCIe-2.0 16x ad I get scores of 3330~ on Unigine Valley so I'm sure you'll be fine :P

Fantastic. I'll start fiddling around a bit on pcpartpicker. I'd really love to watercool this setup, so I can get the maximum out of those 290's.

Again everyone, thanks for the quick responses and the feedback.

Kudos to all of you!
