Quick question about MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus with 3950X

Hello!

I have an X570 Gaming Plus motherboard. I know about its poorer VRM performance compared to similarly priced units. I am wondering whether it could power a 3950X at stock speeds (for future upgradability). I have seen people use the 3900X with it.

As I said before, I am not planning on overclocking

You'll want to have some decent airflow around those VRM heatsinks.

If you have fan(s) in the top of your case, set them up as intakes. It's not the optimal way to run top fans but unless you plan on mounting a blowie matron directly onto the VRMs with a zip tie, this is your only clean option.

Ok thank you! I am not sure whether I will actually ever upgrade, I just wanted to know whether I would have the option.

I will set my fans up like that with my 3700X as well.

Yeah I mean it's not ideal with that board but it is doable.

I'd leave the fans as exhausts in the top with a 3700X. It won't push the VRMs that hard to require direct airflow, especially if you've got some half decent airflow in your case in the first place.

Also, please use quotes (like I did above) or tags (@Hymenopus_Coronatus like this), so we can be notified whenever you reply.

Ok, I'll do that!

Would the 3900X be any different than the 3950X @Mateyyy

Like would I be able to leave the cooling config basically like I would a 3700X

In terms of power draw ?

Afaik it's very similar in terms of current draw  ( compared to the 3900x)

So it is not that much different

Oh ok, so not much different then the 3950X in terms of VRM temps?

It's different

It will be hotter , just not s significant difference afaik

Do as what @Mateyyy said , you will still need a fan to cool the vrms with either cpu's

I actually have one more question.

Would using 40mm fan(s) (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00908QLQ0?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1) over the VRM heatsinks help significantly? Could it help allow OC'ed 3900X/3950X without throttling?

Yes, even a tiny fan will help quite significantly.

Yep

Active cooling will significantly help.

One more question (sorry) @TofuHaroto and @Mateyyy

Do you know around what VRM tier this mobo would be with active cooling?

Well, I couldn't really tell you, simply because the tier list refers to the current handling capacities with very little airflow and there's factors as to how fast the fan spins, how large the fan is, how pressure optimised the fan is, how the heatsink fins are, etc.

What I can say, is that considering Hardware Unboxed tested this board with an overvolted 3900X, a 3950X with PBO would probably be a little less current draw than that, and with a fan on the Vcore it should definitely handle that no problem.

The Gaming Plus has the advantage of having a really big heatsink on the Vcore, compared to the lower-end A Pro for example, and the power delivery is still somehow not as trash as a couple of Asrock's boards iirc, where even with a fan you'd probably want to not enable PBO on a 3950X.
