3500 with GTX 980

So, I found a GTX 980 in my 2nd parts website and it's about the price of RX570 here(about 160 USD)

And I want to pair it with a Ryzen 5 3500.

Good or not? Or get a 2nd hand 1060 / 1650 Super which is about 160 USD also

Between the GTX 980, 1060, 1650 Super and RX 570, I'd go for the 1650S. It's the fastest out of the bunch (even if by a small margin), consumes the least amount of power and is built on the most recent architecture out of these.

The GTX 980 marginally beats the 1060 and is basically the same as a 1650 super

Get the newest card. Or, if you already have a capable GPU, hold off until later this year.

Not sure if the GTX 980 is really much faster than the RX570, 1650S or 1060. It's about the same performances I think, the 980 is just not as efficient.
But overall, it's an odd pairing. I don't know if I want to recommand the 3500 actually. Much rather recommand a 3300X or a 3600. The 3500 is a pretty odd middle ground with only six cores without SMT, that's not that much to play around for games by today's standard.

Traditionally with Nvidia cards, the older they are, the less they are being optimized. This was especially evident with the GTX780 and 780Ti. The 780TI used to handily beat the 980 which was reversed a year later. The same has happened with the 980 vs 1070. The 1070 used to be about the same, but is now quite a bit faster.

So, rule of thumb, at the same price, pick the newest card, as suggested by @Nickathom
