I would expect prices to drop harder/faster than some of the older generations. If I were to buy a new AMD build I would still pick up a b550 for $120-$150.

B550 is more X470 than it is B450, so imo over $250 is still acceptable, just depends on what's actually on it.

Some B550 mobo have better specs than X570 counterpart, while cheaper. If X570 and B550 mobo were launched at the same time last year. I sure will pick the B550 version.

I think part of the reason for high prices is that everything is so constrained, supply wise, right now. So much stuff is out of stock. Maybe once things start opening back up a little more, prices will become more reasonable. 

Truth be told, though, there really isn't a REASON for B550 to exist. B450 is the same thing except for PCIe4, for all intents and purposes. Who's buying a midrange motherboard and putting a multi-hundred dollar SSD into it? They should have just scrapped B550, made B455 or something that is essentially a B450 with out of the box guaranteed support for the new 4000 series chips. Then next year, do a B650/Z670 simultaneously to make sure you line up your launches so there isn't a gaping hole in the middle or low end of the lineup.

 

Honestly, I think they need to REMOVE features from the B chips. They aren't doing any A chips anymore, so move the B series further to the lower end. Right now, what's the main reason to get a Z570 over a B550? More USB 10Gbit ports? That's not a compelling reason. With Intel, you 'can't' OC with H or Q series chips. There's a REALLY good reason to buy a Z series. With AMD, that segregation just isn't there.

just imagine a newbie wants to get a ryzen 4000 from scratch, 

either they had to buy these premium boards OR get old one and gamble for bios issues

If you cant even pick between these two chipsets without losing your mind, get a prebuilt. Building a PC needs thinking, buying a prebuilt doesn't.

X570 is more workstation from the beginning, it's just AMD delaying B550 for so long that's the problem

X570 boards are £126, £146 and £150.

Why would you go B550?

The ONLY thing I can think is the lack of need for active cooling on the chipset. One less whiny little fan in there. That's... that's really it.

I think it really doesnt matter (just like x570) for those that aim for 3700x or lower/older; for the majority b450 is good enough anyway, b550 doesnt change that just like x570 didnt. Anything better is just for "feel good" for most average gaming joes with 1 hdd and a boot nvme.

 

Lets face it, if the tomahawk max didnt just get a bios size upgrade but also a vrm upgrade of lets say +$10 all would have been well for the majority of gaming rigs for the next 4 to 5 years, even with 3900x and 3950x and later 4xxxx. Pcie4 wont bring anything shocking, just like ddr5 wont; weve landed in small increment land a while ago already.

 

Magically a 2700x 105w tdp could run fine on b450 with moderate vrms but somehow a 65w 3700x needs 5x the vrm capabilities. Surely marketing by having a major channel pretending you wont use any case fans, have 0 airflow and a kid with gimp and a few photos assuming youll overclock a 3950x with ln2 on a $100 board took care of that i guess. (P.s. love them both and im exaggerating here for amusement purposes but it does illustrate a point).

 

Leaves 3900x and above; for those with deeper pockets. If spending 400+ on cpu alone the difference between a $120  quality b450 board or $190 b550 board vs lets say $230 x570 isnt as big as it seems with a $150 cpu. I see then choice for a higher board just like leather seats in a car, not a neccesity at all indeed, but nice to have and in the total sum of a new car the cost is acceptable if the car already wasnt a budget option to begin with.

 

Personally I find the lets say +$600 shift in high end gpu pricing of recent years more frustrating than a 50 to 75 buck increase we now see on mobos. That impacts "new build" prices a lot more.
