It really is a much better idea to go with something like a 3300X with a really good motherboard. You'll be able to slot in a very fast CPU later that will blow your friend's 9700 out of the water in terms of gaming performance, since the platform is still supported by up coming AMD chips.

 

As opposed to going with a dead platform....

 

This coming from someone who owns an i9 9900K on a Z390 board, with no upgrade path aside from replacing the entire platform.

I own an 8th gen i7. As such, I am telling you to not buy a 9tg gen i7 which is pretty much the same crap just with 8 cores and no SMT rather than 6 with SMT. The 9700 models are a flat out downgrade compared to the previous gen and even then I'd not recommend the same setup as me for gaming

They are more expensive and it is a locked chip

my ryzen 7 3700x when overclocked to 4.3ghz beats my friend's i7 9700k overclocked to 4.9ghz.

i7 9700 cant beat 3700x unless it runs over 4.5ghz which it wont with crappy H- series motherboard or/and crappy coolers.

3700x can run on pretty cheap motherboard without thermal throttling.

3700x is just better choice over i7 9700.

And since 3700x has 8 more thread than i7 9700 it has much better 0.1% and 1% lows, meaning that you will see less and less big fps drops and less stuttering with 3700x

Motherboard tier list. Tier A for overclocking 5950x. Tier B for overclocking 5900x, Tier C for overclocking 5800X. Tier D for overclocking 5600X. Tier F for 4/6 core Cpus at stock. Tier E avoid.
