What res do you play at?

gloop
Go to solution Solved by NineEyeRon,

1080p 144hz is the sweet spot for price and performance.

Any higher resolution is a nice luxury but is far from standard.

Higher refresh rates are also still niche.

I aspire to 1440p 144hz as I see that as the ideal, but it comes at a significant cost vs my current resoltion and its harder to justify spending the cash.

No person should ever be ashamed or feel inadequate for using 1080p 144hz for gaming, it is where you will find most gamers except those who can afford the luxury of something more.

Anyone at less than 1080p 144hz should aim to try and get there, if feesable and affordable but one single important thing remains.

ALWAYS have fun playing games, if the fun stops, stop.

What res?

I've been wondering what res does this community play at.

I personally play at 3840x2160, and my 5700xt can manage 60fps high for most games.

According to https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/steam-july-survey-reveals-1080p-graphics-preference/, roughly 64% of steam users play at 1920x1080.

I feel like the standard res is starting to move towards 2560x1440 now.

Any answers are appreciated.

I'm one of those "I can barely tell the difference between 1080 and 4k" luddites, so I play at 1080p.  Honestly, I appreciate the higher FPS over the aesthetic anyways.

EDIT: Until I get into VR.  Then I need both.

1440 is still quite a bit more expensive than 1080 so for me its just the fact that i havent got round to having the money for a new moniotr yet. im looking to upgrade gpu from 570 in the summer so i guess ill purchase a new one around then.

I have a 4k monitor. I have to play at 1080p because my GPU can't handle 4k in any games... Newer GPUs cost so damn much... We need a new Radeon 580 at a decent price point... I can't afford to shell out 500$ for what is technically a lower mid tier GPU like the 2060.

The RX 5700 would be a pretty large step up from a 7970

and it gives you image sharpening to run games at say 75% of 4k, but still have it look like 4k.

The 5700 is over 500$ (CAD).

Hence why I said we need a new 580. Since that's about 250 to 300$. Which is affordable, while being "good" (but somewhat outdated, today). Honestly the most I could shell out today is 350$, and even there, I'd have a hard time justifying buying whatever new GPU I could get at that price range these days. (Unless I go on the Used market)

I'm sure 1080p will be the king for a long time yet.  24" 1080p 100Hz+... it's really just good enough for most anyone.  And pretty cheap to hit all around.

I play at 3440x1440 100Hz because divorce and retail therapy.  Otherwise I'd still be at 1080p most likely, I was always a step or two behind the bleeding edge (i5 4670K + GTX770 before Emma).

Not sure if I will keep spending the kind of coin needed to remain here tho.  Other hobbies I have are costly too :(

I have not.  1080p monitors are now in the price range where I feel like I can get a good one for under $200.  1440p, though, seems to run closer to ~$300 in the size I demand (27").  At that point, there's all the Linus-caliber criticism I'd be trying to level at the monitor.  It's definitely not warranted -- I could get the cheapest monitor with a decent refresh rate and response time and be impressed by it, but meh, I dunno.

On the other hand, I am getting a valve index once my turn comes up in queue.  if I can play vanilla games on a "virtual" tv screen, that might solve the problem :)

It depends on the game.

I aim for native resolution and refresh rate, put as much eye candy as I can within that. If native is nto feasible at max details, I start scaling back details, resolution, or accepting lower framerates, depending on what the game looks like and what matters most in that game.

Since I go for native, it depends on teh device too: I run a few less demanding games in a 1080p60 laptop, the rest in a PC with 4K60 monitor, where most of the resolution drops happen. Some games don't really have a 4K version even if they allow for it, the textures just look as bad as lower resolution, so lower resolution with AA may be just as good or better (depending on the impact of AA on framerates).

I used to play at 1920x1200. Despite the advantages of the new monitor, I kind of miss that one, if nothing else for the aspect ratio. But gaming isn't where it made the most difference, anyway.

I guess I am the only that does 720p here..

Laptop overheats if I push it to the limits therefore I usually lower the resolution and usually cap the FPS to try to minimize the heat as much as possible.
