will a stock cooler work for a 9600kf

Owen382

I bought a 9600kf, and all of my parts came, but my cooler won't be here for another week. I have a stock cooler from my old i5 6500, but that cooler is only designed for 65 watts. (I think) If I don't overclock my 9600kf, will a stock cooler be adequate for a week? Should I under volt my cpu for a week?

Yes.

If CPU temperatures exceed ~95*C under load, yes.

The intel stock cooler has trouble with i3s - you're in for overheating. I'd suggest not putting load on it. Keep temps under 90*C for safety

So if I can stay off gta for a week, and only do like basic tasks, I should be fine?

Just run it. It won’t die.. it might not be happy but she’ll go. Maybe have an extra fan pointed at it.

Pretty much yes. Repeated overheating can damage a CPU and the stock cooler is utterly incapable of cooling a 9600K under moderate or heavy load. As soon as you play GTA for 10 minutes, you'll be in the 90*C range.

A short term workaround might be to use power limiting in the mobo bios. You might have to dig around to find it. When you find it, set the long term power limit to 65W. The short term limit can be a bit higher. You will see some hit to the clocks but it'll keep the power in check. Fortunately because of the way power scales, you don't lose that much clock from power limiting.

update: Ok so I put on the stock cooler, just to see how it worked, and while benchmarking, I think intel limits the CPU power, It peaked at 65 watts while using the stock cooler, so I think intel might put that on as a safety feature. Also, It never got above 60 degrees.
