Apple Pay one step closer to be released in Mexico

Apple Pay is coming to Mexico after nearly 6 years of been announced. And, while Android Pay and Samsung pay have been established for quite some time, it looks like the Big Apple is ready to take the spotlight (and, who knows, maybe the lead) for contactless payments. While multiple banks already offer cards with NFC chips on them, as well as NFC-enabled card readers, it hasn't been the mainstream yet, but with the Cupertino-based company finally adding support for The Land of the Coronas, this might change soon.

 

9to5Mac, iDownloadblog and many other news outlets have covered the news. Twitter user Juan De Santiago added a card from Banregio, Monterrey-based bank, successfully.

Obviously, the verification process failed as support for Apple Pay hasn't been announced officially yet. Looks like it's the only partnered bank so far at the time of the writing, I've personally tried it with cards issued by Bancomer, Scotiabank Mexico, Santander and Banorte and none of them worked.

Which means that Apple Pay might launch soon in Mexico to compete with already stablished services like Android Pay, Samsung Pay, Aregntina-based MercadoPago and more, being already accepted in multiple locations around Mexico.

That said, I've legit have only ever seen 1 person pay with their phone in a store here in Canada...

It's just so much easier to pay with a contactless card... no need to open any app or select anything, you just take it out of your pocket (the same you would a phone) and press it. Done. No extra steps required.

Sure it might be convenient if you carry like 10 cards on you... But I sure don't.

I have seen the complete opposite. Depending on the city all I see is Apple and Samsung pay

I used to think the same until I got an iPhone, all you have to do is press the power button twice & your card is ready. (Provided FaceID passes, but I haven't had it fail yet). Carrying zero cards is great because i'd definitely end up losing them if I did.

I mean, yes. So it's easier for someone to steal your info. I would rather have that extra layer of security with Pay, even if it requires me to take out my phone. Which I would already have in my hand in most cases.

Ive been trying to get used to using these (I have samsung pay) but I never remember tbh. I always have cash on me so I always have my wallet.

 

Ive tried doing the no wallet thing. but I just cant do it.

While that is true. I doubt itll be long before skimmers are made for these payments. If there isnt already.

Where I'm at, a couple local grocery stores and 5.11 stores actually started removing the card readers in favor of Google Pay. I'm all for it, but I'd like the option of using my card as a backup option. I think debit and credit cards will start to fade away soon.

Wait... They use separate readers for contactless cards & Google Pay/Apple Pay? Here it's just all in one.

It's all in one here too. I just use GPay as an example cause I don't like the Banana company.

Use it all the time here.  It helps that I have an Apple Watch, so for me it's faster than any other payment method.
