Does 16 ram enough for gaming and little basic editing

Is 16 ram enough for gaming and little basic  I'm on a budget I will over clocking ram

depends on the type of games, basic editing as in photo editing, should be fine

I'd say that should be fine.  Most gsames don't use more than 8GB and unless you're doing heavy video or image editing, 16GB should be more than enough.

 

A couple of things to note.  If you're going for ryzen or the last 2 or 3 gens of intel, they won't work with windows 7 as support has been dropped.  There are workarounds, but I've just spent the last 2 days trying them and in the end, had to upgrade to win10.  Secondly, I've just upgraded my system and my 3000mhz corsair RAM is languishing at 2133mhz so ask about in forums like this as to compatibility for the parts before you buy them.

As a above average user for gaming, and light workloads, there is only very niche games that use more than 16gb (which a portion of that is my OS, browser, discord etc) which are typically heavily modded open world games.  

 

There is no need for over 16gb of RAM at this time for the average gaming consumer.  I rarely crest 12gb on all the games I play with tons of tabs open on my browser (which is the largest culprit for RAM in my case)

You are wrong for consumer boards and processors.  4 slots does not equate to quad channel.  HEDT systems and threadripper systems (and then server grade) get quad channel.  Us users (X570 mobos included) only have dual channel.

 

As for both (Intel and AMD) you are correct, single channel degrades performance so you want at least 2 slots filled to create dual channel (four slots filled is still dual channel)

You asked the wrong question, then.

 

High End Desk Tops (HEDT or Intel) or Threadripper (for AMD) are the only (I want to say 99.9% as there may be an obscure something or another I don't know about) consumer level platforms with quad channel.
