Upgrade to 1070, 1080 or 2060?

So right off of the bat: I want, don't need, a new GPU.

 

I currently play what few games I do on my 4k 60Hz television with an RX 580.  At 1080p it keeps things pretty and at 60fps for the most part.  I mainly play stuff offline and single player like DMC 5, GTA V, Gears 5, Dragonball Xenoverse 2.  No need for super refresh capable graphics.

 

I have a computer in my basement that I wanted to upgrade it's GTX 960, so I am replacing that with my RX 580.  The question I have is whether I should drop $300+ for the 2060 to future proof with Ray tracing, or just snag a good used deal on a GTX 1070 or 1080 if they drop low enough.  Either way I know I can drop some settings and get respectable 1440p framerates, which is where I want to go.

The 1070 can be had for about $175ish, while the 1080 seems to be about $100 more than that and the 2060 another $50 on top of that.  As I said, I don't need a new GPU so I'm having a hard time justifying the money on more than a 1070 unless Ray Tracing is going to become a necessary feature to have soon.

 

So is the "PS5 and Xbox Ray Tracing is going to make everything else obsolete other than RTX cards" talk legitimate, or would you not bother?

I would not suggest a 2060 just for raytracing since it's not really a powerful enough card to run raytracing in most games anyway.

Only if you like gaming at below 30FPS... The 2060 is nowhere near the performance required for realtime raytracing in gaming.

 

You picked one of the worst times possible to upgrade. Both the AMD big Navi and Nvidia next gen release dates are only a couple of months away, and they will severely lower the price of the 20x0 series when they launch, and possibly even make them "obsolete".

2060 isnt good enough for fast raytracing, and if youre gonna get a card like 1070 or 1080 i'd get rx 5700 xt, less expensive and runs around the same or better. also better compared to nvidia overtime.

If you have to get a GPU soon, then definitely go the used route for the reasons already mentioned above. Former mining cards can be had for reasonable costs and they typically work well. There is too much change coming to the GPU markets in the near future to invest in a new card that you barely even need.

Those are good points, although I still won't be looking above the (current) 2060 price range when that happens.

 

I have a tinkering itch that needs scratching though, so I guess I will drop some coin on a used 1070 deal and see what comes down the road in a few months.  At the very least I would guess a 1070 should be fine to handle 1080p at 60fps for some time to come.

Used rx580 for around $100 is what I would do. I just sold mine today for $100 so it’s feasible.

Yeah, but you should hopefully be able to get around 2070 Super performance for that price then.

An RX 580 can even handle that with max settings in just about anything... I'd save some money and go that route personally.

I never suggest getting a card that old and at that high of a price used.  Who knows what the hell its been thru and if it has no warranty if you have issues your screwed

I always suggest it. Beats spending the same for a weaker card especially if we consider that a high price.

GTX 1070ti or 1080 can do that just fine...1080ti would do it for longer.

in fact 1080ti can do 4K 60fps in just about any games if you tweak the settings properly...and often you can get a 25-30% boost in performance without loosing key features or getting noticeably less detailed frames.

i bought many second hands parts over the years since que Q6600 days (before that i was buygin new parts) including multiple video cards, motherboards, CPUs, ram...never had anything fail.

yeah but you know graphics cards if you buy a slightly higher end model like a strix, or an MSI gaming for example...if it works fine when you test it it'll likely work for many many years still...i've never had a card fail on me personally and i must be on my like 10th or 12th graphics card at this point something like that...

RTX (as in, Nvidia's raytracing) is dead with very little games supporting it; so it should not be a reason to consider an RTX card. Used 1080's a a great deal right now, and a 1080 will have better performance than a 2060.

What about a 2060 KO, it is supposed to be a stripped down 2080 chip is it not?
