Small NAS for PLEX

Lays

Hi guys, I was hoping to get some help.  I've been out of the PC game for years now, so I'm not entirely sure what to look for parts wise. ( This is my first post here in like 2 years, lol)

So I already have HDD's, I just need a CPU/board/ram/psu/case.

I've been using my current gaming system as a plex server for a while now, and I want to move all of it to a NAS and have my PC back for gaming and such.

I was looking around and apparently I can use intel's quicksync to decode my plex videos, so I can get away with something like a current gen pentium right? Like a G5400 ?

Sure, but remember that you need to pay for Plex Pass in order to be able to enable HW-transcoding. You can't use HW-transcoding with just the free Plex.

I think I already pay for it if I remember right.

Well, you should be good to go, then. What OS were you planning on? FreeNAS doesn't support HW-transcording, if my memory serves, so you should use something else. Unraid is a good option, though it's not free. Can't remember if Openmediavault does Plex, but you could always check.

windows, it's simple and easy, I'm not concerned about redundancy either really.

I wouldn't go freenas unless you have the hardware to back it up. Its not incredibly demanding, but ZFS isn't super RAM friendly.

Also, just for reference, I run Plex in an Ubuntu VM under ESXi, next to other VM's and freenas. I can transcode 1080p to 720 no problem at all, 3-4 streams without issue, and can do a single 4k to 720 transcode, and thats all only on 2 threads of my i3.... homelab hardware in my sig.

@Lays i have a link to a build for a freenas server in my sig that would work well as a baseline for multiple 1080p streams. You might end up looking for slightly newer xeons or celerons now that core counts have crept up, but at least it gives a starting list that functions really well as a 4 drive system with easy expansion to 6 drives.

Edit: actually that was back with the atom which struggled a bit. Im currently using same system except with a xeon 1231v3 and a similar mobo. Ofc the same hardware would work fine for any OS.

  • 4 weeks later...

I can't recommend Synology enough. They are inexpensive, highly flexible, and have lots of apps for other things. By far my favorite NAS.
