Rainbox Six: Siege to start supporting Vulkan API as of Patch 4.3

CGurrell

As explained in this Youtube Video from NGON, a channel run by the developers of Ubisoft's Uplay PC client, Rainbox Six: Siege will support the Vulkan API from Patch 4.3, which should be coming soon. According to Ubisoft, this option will be available on all GPUs that support the Vulkan API, which are any Kepler GPU or newer from Nvidia (GTX 6 series and above), GCN1 and newer from AMD (Radeon HD 77XX series and newer), and Intel CPUs with Intel HD Graphic 5XX and newer (mostly Core iX-6XXX CPUs and newer).

To launch Rainbow Six: Siege on Vulkan (once the patch drops), players will be able to "select the appropriate play button when launching the game on PC". On Uplay that will look like this:

(No news on Steam support yet, however I believe Steam users can launch the game direct from Uplay anyway).

It may just be me, but it seemed like Vulkan fell off of the face of the earch back when DX12 was announced. As an avid R6 Siege player, I was surprised by the announcement, and I'm excited for the potential performance improvements Vulkan may bring. That being said, I'm not getting carried away just yet.

You can read more about this on the Rainbox Six Vulkan API Blog here.

What do you guys think? A big change for an older game that could help a lot of people, or a technical exercise with no real benefit to end users?

From my understanding, you won't see much performance gains from vulkan on windows over using dx12 due to dx12 and windows both being made by microsoft while vulkan is from another company. That said I love vulkan and supporting it means it can be more easily ported over to linux which will be awesome.

Yes, but the old AnvilNext engine that Siege is built on runs on DX11, not 12.  So Vulkan may bring some interesting performance benefits.  I'm more curious to see if their Vulkan implementation supports my SLI setup in Windows 10, because their DX11 implementation does superbly.  Both of my cards get a workout while playing Siege at 4K/140 with deets cranked.

Don't care about the game but will look at benchmarks that eventually come out. Anyone keeping score on DX12 vs Vulkan performance for titles that support both?

The performance is pretty impressive, but as I feared it's single-GPU only.  With my SLI'd 2080TI cards in DX11, I can keep Siege bumping up against my 140FPS cap in 4K.  With Vulkan, it hits 140FPS every so often, but isn't capable of staying there.  Mostly it floats in the 120ish range, which is still pretty damned good.
