AMD Radeon R9 280

TOMPPIX
In addition to the Radeon R7 265, AMD is also planning to launch its 6th Radeon R9 series desktop discrete graphics card running up to Computex 2014, the Radeon R9 280. The R9 280, as some of you might have guessed by now, is based on the 28 nm "Tahiti" silicon, with a core-configuration identical to that of the Radeon HD 7950 from the previous generation, according to a WCCFTech report. The chip could hence feature 1,792 stream processors, 112 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 3 GB of memory.

The Radeon R9 280 could be clocked above 800 MHz on the core, and 5.00 GHz (GDDR5-effective) on the memory, which works out to 224 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Given that the R9 280X is still on paper a $299 SKU, AMD may intend the R9 280 to be priced within the sub-$300 segment. Beneath the R9 280X, AMD's GPUs are unappealing to crypto-currency miners as the performance-Watt and price-performance equations turn unfavorable, and so the R9 280 has a fair chance of sticking to its intended price-point, away from being wrecked by shamelessly greedy retailers.

Miners rejoice, Just re-badging all the cards, yet to see them re-badged but with added TrueAudio support or something like that. You know making it worth it in the slightest.

The new naming scheme is a clusterfuck, isn't it.

At least they've finally filled the gaping hole between the 270X and 280X. For a while the 760 almost looked like a good buy.

Actually consider this:

290x = Hawaii

290 = Hawaii (less clock less cores)

280x = Tahiti

280 = Tahiti (less clock less cores)

same as how 7900 and 6900 were done. The 270(x) is the odd one out.

The 7950 is only around 3% slower than the 7970... what the hell is the point of rebranding it?

TrueAudio has to do with the hardware implementation and something to do with the new Hawaii architecture. That's why only 270 260 and 290(x) have it. I remember reading it from one of the interview with AMD engineer. Article was on tomshardware

EDIT: Corrected by rentaspoon that it was the 260 that has TrueAudio. Not 270.

The 270 doesnt have it as far as I know I think its the 260 but this pisses me off as I would of brought a 280 instead of a 270.

AMDs marketing is so broken.

i still can't believe the used the most confusing branding method to this date on their cards, by this age it should be something already figured out

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

i use to have the second best link in the world here, but it died ;_; its a 404 now but it will always be here

From what I understand the 270 is a 7850 OC, the 270x is a 7870 OC, the 280 Will be a 7950 OC, the 280x is a 7970 GHz and then the two Hawaii cards. It seems simple enough to me.

I really need to change my Sig, I'm not running a 260x (which by the way is a 7790 OC) anymore, I downgraded to a 650ti because Bonaire was giving me problems.

Case: Thermaltake Versa H35 | CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700x (@4.0Ghz) Cooling: Cooler Master MasterLiquid Lite 240 | MOBO: Gigabyte AB350M-DS3H | RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 16GB (2x8GB) 3333Mhz | GPU: MSI ARMOR 8GB OC GTX 1070 | Storage: SAMSUNG 970 EVO 250GB, 1TB Seagate 2.5" 5400RPM | PSU: Corsair CX750M

A $250 7950 would be awesome! Also here are AMD cards since apparently everyone is confused about which is which:

AMD R9 290X= GCN 1.1 Hawaii (TrueAudio support)

AMD R9 290 = GCN 1.1 Hawaii (TrueAudio support)

R9 280X = HD 7970

R9 280 = HD 7950 (apparently)

R9 270X = HD 7870 GHz with a memory OC

R9 270 = HD 7870

AMD R7 260X = GCN 1.1 OC'd 7790 (TrueAudio support)

AMD R7 250X = HD 7770

I think you're right since reading from all the other posts, 270 is a rebrand. Should be the 260 instead. I know it's one of those with newer architecture. Edited my post so I don't mislead others.

That would require redoing the tahitit GPU to add the true audio chip.

I actually wanted to buy a 7950 rebrand ever since the 280X was released.

I'm honestly shocked that it took AMD this long to release the damned thing.

Yeah I thoughted they had done with new graphics cards for a while

EDIT: As long as the dont release true audio on the 270 etc this year thats fine by me

Same, from the start announcement of the 280X I'd been wanting one....

A LOT of people would have just Crossfired their 7950's with the R9-280 like others have been doing with 7970+280x, but instead sold them, and bought something better with profits.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Thank god too, anyone still who has not sold their 7950's will soon have a crossfire option without having to buy a fresh starter higher end card to do so...
