Cable that supports 144hz

JGalsky
Go to solution Solved by Princess Luna,

Wait so... you bought a RTX 2080 Ti... a 1200 USD +.... and then you bought a 195 dollars ANCIENT TN 1920x1080p monitor?

Dude why?

Any ways you have to buy an active converter like this one:

https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-DisplayPort-DVI-Adapter-Dual-Link/dp/B00A493CNY/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=active+144hz+converter+dvi+dual+link+display+port&qid=1578422233&sr=8-3

Which alone costs more than half what you already paid for this ancient monitor.

Talk about poor planning.

Hello all! I just purchased a new 144hz monitor.  However, I don't have a cable that supports 144hz and I'm looking to see if I can find a cable or adapter.

Monitor: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-GN246HL-Bbid-Widescreen-Response/dp/B00KO4518I/ref=pd_ybh_a_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=5NHQRPC14J6M63J9N009
This monitor comes with 1 HDMI that does not support 1080p @144hz, another VGA port that obviously doesn't support 1080p @144hz, and a DVI port, which is the only port that supports it.

It came with a DVI to DVI cable that I was using with my 1080 to run at 144hz.  However, I just upgraded to a 2080TI and it does not have a DVI port.  So I need a DVI to either DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 (GPU has it).

However, I cannot seem to find a cable that is DisplayPort to DVI that supports 144hz and I can't find the HDMI to DVI that supports it either.

Any advice?

Thanks!

What 2080ti has no DVI?

All of them since DVI was phased out in favor for more up-to-date latest HDMI/Display Port revisions.

However, I cannot seem to find a cable that is DisplayPort to DVI that supports 144hz and I can't find the HDMI to DVI that supports it either.

This is because:

  • DisplayPort to DVI cables support single-link DVI only, which is only good for up to 1920x1200 60Hz or whatever else can fit in that bandwidth. 1080p 144Hz does not fit in this. You need dual-link DVI.
  • HDMI maps 1:1 to a single-link DVI, which I mentioned earlier doesn't have enough bandwidth for 1080p 144Hz.. To get higher resolutions, HDMI simply bumps up the clock speed, which DVI is not compatible with.

You'd need to find some sort of active converter, but it's up in the air if they support 1080p 144Hz. If it supports 4K 60Hz or even 1440p 60Hz, it should in theory support 1080p 144Hz.

I think Princess's point is still incredibly valid.

Free crap monitor still doesn't go with a 2080Ti.

Pony up!

Can you just buy a new monitor? Most Display port to DVI adapters are going to be up to 60hz only as they are only for single link and what you need is dual link DVI, unless you want to pay $100 to $200 for an active adapter, just buy a new monitor that has display port.
