Dell laptop not recognizing headphones

nonius

I have a Dell Inspiron 15-5800. When I unplug the headphones and plug them back in, the laptop doesn't recognize them. When I restart it, it recognizes them. Running Win10  and all the latest drivers.

No. They have to be plugged in when booting the laptop.

looking at specs your headphone jack is a combo jack (also mic). does your headphones have that kind of jack? if not you might need something like THIS for that jack to work correctly

looking on dells site all i found was this with people saying it fixed your issue

1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the search box and hit Enter).
2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right-click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".
3. Select to "Update Driver Software".
4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.
7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).
8. Click "Next".
9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
10. Restart the laptop.

You will now switch to the native audio driver.

Use "generic software device" if "High Definition Audio" isn't listed.

I know this is a necropost, but the above works, and did NOT require reboot.

1. DOWNLOAD OLDER DRIVERS (Realtek High Definition Audio Driver for Vista, Win7, Win8, Win8.1, Win10 64-bit R2.82)
FROM HERE

2. UNINSTALL "REALTEK(R) AUDIO" FROM DEVICE MANAGER (also click attempt to remove drivers)
3. DISABLE INTERNET
4. REBOOT
5. RUN "0009-64bit_Win7_Win8_Win81_Win10_R282.exe" TO INSTALL OLDER DRIVERS
6. REBOOT
7. ENABLE INTERNET
8. TEST IT! IT SHOULD NOW WORK!
9. YOU CAN AUTO-UPDATE REALTEK DRIVERS, FUNCTIONALITY REMAINS!
