New Ryzen 3800x running really hot

I just finished building my new computer, and everything seemed like it was in order. I installed HWMonitor just to make sure that the CPU wasn't running too hot, and I noticed that the temps are higher than what seems to be normal. I checked the BIOS first when testing to see if the computer would post, and there it stayed idle at 51 degrees Celsius. In HWMonitor I'm now seeing it jump between 45 and 60 degrees at idle. I ran the computer through 3D Mark Time Spy to check if it was too hot under load too. There it peaked at around 88 degrees.

I don't know about you, but I feel like these temps are too high. Should I remove the CPU cooler, wipe off the paste and apply some new?

Here are my specs:

MOBA: Asus rog strix b450-f gaming

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3800x (with stock cooler, using the thermal paste that was already on the cooler)

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200mhz 16gb

GPU: Msi Geforce GTX 1070 gaming x

PSU: Corsair RM750x

EDIT: I should probably also mention that it reached 78 degrees while installing new graphics drivers.

Ryzen 3000 series - 115c I believe is thermtrip / 95c throttle point / 70c High Temp Alert (max fan rpm)

88c max temp on the stock cooler is not a surprise. In fact, normal.

Upgrade the cooler.

Im not a big fan of the AMD Stock coolers, when i used the one that came with my 2700x i was getting temps into the 80s.

When i switched to an AIO i cut the temps by about 20*c under max load.

I thought that maybe could be the case. When buying the new parts, I didn't think the stock cooler would actually get that hot, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. The fan is also really loud when the temp jumps up. Do you have any recommendations for a replacement? I think I'd prefer an air cooler over liquid cooling.

Sounds like a bad mount.  Did you check it?

I've not checked that yet. It seems like I'll need to apply new thermal paste if I choose to remove the cooler, which I don't have at the moment. I might be wrong though.

Well in the mean time you can just make sure that the cooler is screwed down tight.

The 3800X is a 105W TDP cooler. I'm not sure what exactly you have expected to see here? The cooler is okay for what it is: a free cooler. It's certainly better than Intel's stock cooler but it's still not good and certainly not adequate for a 3800X. Get a proper cooler. You can have decent air coolers for like 30-40 bucks.

I agree with people saying that you could get a better cooler, in my opinion a cooler from Noctua would be a fantastic option, its cool and its really quiet. I suggest the NH-D15 SE-AM4

However if you still want to stick with the stock cooler for a while then I suggest that you go into your BIOS and look for a feature called AMD Cool'n'Quiet, It works by reducing the processor's clock rate and voltage when the processor is idle. The aim of this technology is to reduce overall power consumption and lower heat generation, allowing for slower (thus quietercooling fan operation.(Taken from Wikipedia)

Give it a shot and update us if it helped with the temps ;3

This is actually fairly reasonable temps for the stock cooler.  Ryzen does idle considerably higher than most, and the temp spikes are the the cores boosting temporarily for whatever it is you're doing.  It's completely normal.  You can't compare idle temps to Intel, usually in the late 30's to 40's depending on where you live.  Even with a 360mm cooler I idle around 45c on my 3700x.

i idle at low 40° with my 2700x and my 50$ cryorig H7 makes sure it never goes over 70° during gaming load (even battlefield with rtx and 1440p and ultra settings)

Anything i've written between the * and * is not meant to be taken seriously.

keep in mind that helping with problems is hard if you aren't specific and detailed.

i'm also not a professional, (yet) so make sure to personally verify important information as i could be wrong.

Temperature fluctuation is normal.

I have 3600x with mentioned noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4 (I know overkill, but I had great deal). I have idle/low load temps between 30 - 45.

Max load up to around 75 degrees. I was expecting better temps, tried to remount, repaste, but after same result I just got use to it.

I think even smaller cooler would do great.

That's actually the cooler that I wanted to get, but my budget didn't allow it at the time. I'll definitely try that one out when I have the dough. I've never heard about "Cool'n'Quiet", but I'll give it a shot! Thanks for the help :)|

That's good to hear! I guess there's nothing wrong after all.

After getting some sleep, I got up and checked to see if all the fans in the case were working. It appeared that one of the front fans weren't working, and it turned out that the connector just wasn't plugged in all the way. After getting that fan to work, I also installed the fan from my old liquid cooler in the back of the case to draw air out the back. The idle temp has now gone all the way down to 40-ish, though it's still jumping up and down whenever the CPU boosts up to 4,3 GHz. But I guess that's normal.

Thank you all for the help! I'll give you an update once I've given that "Cool'n'Quiet" feature a shot.

Idle temp at 40C is decent with a stock cooler.

The NH-D15 from Noctua as you mentioned earlier is one of the best aircooler on the market but it is quite big so check clearance for your RAM and if it will fit in your case.

I would probably look at NH-U12S as the sweet spot.

Arctic Freezer 34 Core Duo - $40 but worth it. It is small, compact, looks really good and the reviews have it as one of the best budget coolers on the market, performing as good as many much more expensive coolers.

  • 2 months later...

So I finished building a Ryzen 7 3800x myself using the stock RGB cooler that it came with. Normally when building PCs, I just wipe off the factory applied paste pad and apply the liquid form myself. Truth is, I wanted to see how well it performed as "stock" out-of-the-box it could be. Temps are terrible! Idles around 60C, and under Prime95 will hit the wall of 95C (thermal throttle).

Needless to say, I too will be replacing the HSF. It's really too bad as I love the RGB effect of a thin ring against my all black case 😞 I want to keep it, but not when it can't do the job cooling the CPU under load.
