What do you think about the new XBOX Series X?

I dunno.  I don’t have an Xbox.  If they doubled the gpu capacity it’s reasonable that they could double frame rate.  Reasonable and “actually happened” are different things though.  I ask because it’s much easier to do cinematics than gameplay.

Right. I certainly have my doubts, but am hopeful ?

My very first thoughts seeing that new console are...

  • That's a PC.
  • It should cost exactly what it costs to build a PC equivalent.
  • There should be no reason it can't achieve 90-120 fps in every single game with that amount of space to work with.
  • If it achieves 90+ fps in 4K in most of its games, pretty sure PC gamers are going to be interested in switching back to console.
  • With these things being said, it's probably going to be priced insanely high, and for good reason if it achieves all this.
  • The PC master race may cease to exist.

Especially if they can get consistently good mouse/keeb support, IIRC Xboxes already support it but not all the games do. Like I said earlier in this thread, if they can make it work with standard VR gear and other PC peripherals as well (it is just a PC with tweaked Windows 10 tbh), then they can probably offer some insane value.

They already run Windows 10. Or more (AFAIK), a unix foundation with windows 10 in a container and then I forget what the games run in/on. But to my knowledge the Xbox OS is essentially tweaked Windows. Given that they're on Zen series CPUs and standard arch GPUs, they're getting less and less different from a normal PC. MS has also been supporting PC more with their Game Pass stuff, if they decided to bleed some compatibility over between the two sets of hardware, they could be really damn competitive.

If it were a genuine copy of Windows 10, the value would sky rocket. That's basically a PC within a console because you'd then be able to install additional launchers. Steam, UPlay, Origin, etc, etc. That would basically end PC gaming for several people. I mean, how many people do you know own both a PC and a next gen console? I know a LOT, myself included. If a console released to replace both my console(which I don't use any more) and my PC, I wouldn't hesitate to sell them both and buy it. Because it combines all my PC and console friends into one place. As well as of course, all my games.

^ Exactly. IDK if they'll actually unlock it to that extent though, but they technically could. MS doesn't actually sell gaming hardware (other than Xboxes), so I don't see how it could really hurt them, and it would push the industry a good bit.

I agree...however, I highly doubt W10 will be accessible by the end user. If anything, it will be a severely slimmed down version.

PlayStation.  By a mile.  Might be less dangerous though.  Someone is going to mistake the thing for a pencil holder and I bet there’s a fan under that grille

GPU or CPU? Because 2.1GHz on a GPU sounds faster than any info on any cards I've seen so far, not including end-user overclocks.

CPU.  GPU is very black box as far as I can tell.  I’ve heard 580 level performance I’ve heard 5700 level performance I’ve heard 8gb ddr5 I’ve heard 12gb ddr6. AMD Hardware raytracing too, though apparently there’s news on the nex Xbox.  It apparently has a name now and there was reference to “hardware accelerated ray tracing” which could mean a bunch of things it seems.

Ah, alrighty.

Yeh, I posted in the Tech News section about the new name and official reveal. The paranoid conspiracy theorist in me seems to have built up this idea about the ray tracing stuff, so I am curious how this flavor of it will turn out...

The paranoid conspiracy theorist in me did too.  The “hardware accelerated raytracing” thing is actually reassuring to me.  The one that has me buggin at the moment is “patented shader”.  I don’t know if that one has been tried before or not.  I could see it as a possibly dangerous thing to add to a game one didn’t intend to be Xbox exclusive though.

The new shape will be funky though, consoles have always been flat. People's setups are catered to either a flat device on a low shelf, or a thin vertical one

I... honestly don't see the problem?  It's pretty small and can be placed horizontally or vertically,  you could even put a ps4 /xone /ect on top of it... And it honestly doesn't look *that* big either.

It looks very nice.  And very fake.  I'll be surprised if that really is the real thing. xD

If standing, probably the top shelf. I do not know what orientation the new Rectangle Box can be placed but, I hope it works well on its side because my shelf has less headroom.

Actually no. Not vertically anyways. Depending on thermals they're going to have to do a redesign that fits standard entertainment centers. I'm not banking on the thermals being great with it on it's side.

Well the top shelf is reserved for the Limited Edition PS3,  it has a stand and everything and it needs the cooling :)

But anyway, it says in the article this new xbox can be placed horizontally or vertically..  I think it might be a bit tight,  but it would probably fit - and if heat should be an issue (it wasn't for the PS4) then I'd just Noctua the thing up, looks easy enough!

If it were me I’d put it behind the left side of the monitor so it’s disk port could peek out the side.  This may be not a good idea.  I don’t know what needs to be accessed regularly.  This may very well be not the actual device though

Funny enough you're not the first person suggesting to put a device behind my monitor - it's not possible though,  there isn't actually enough clearance *and* that's already where two of the speakers of my 5.1 surround sound are... But there's literally not enough space anyway even if I'd put the monitor more forward (which I don't want either anyways lol)

But,  I do think it would fit,  in the lower shelf,  horizontally of course and I also think there would be vents on the side , Microsoft isn't stupid lol... (well,  not their hardware team ;)

And if thermals would be a problem -> nothing a few Noctuas couldn't fix!

And I also kinda think it's fake or a prototype tbh,  the time of good looking,  high quality consumer electronics is over,  nowadays everything has to have this cheap plastic look ala google chromecast and Amazon fire TV.

I dunno,  it looks fake,  are there any other sources?  ?

Um... it's from Microsoft themselves: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/consoles/xbox-series-x/

It is inline with the overall design of the Xbone and Xbone X as well, I don't see why they'd announce this and then change the design.
