organfailure

Hey, guys...

So, this is kinda ashaming, but how can I convince my parents to let me upgrade to windows 10,

My dad keeps saying that "I will ruin it" etc...

I have no idea what to do as I have bought a program that can only run on windows 10 and I really wanna use it.

No, they do not even know about the prices.

They keep saying "You will break it; Do not touch it..."

Basically, I just said if i could upgrade to windows 10 as it is better, faster and more effective

You can buy an extra ssd or mechanical hdd and install windows on your own drive

You can switch at start-up by pressing F8 or some other key before windows starts booting..

I am pretty much broke right now, and buying an extra ssd would be too long as of I have to upgrade to windows 10 tommorow.

They'll have to give in eventually, support for Windows 7 ends on 14th January 2020. Just say that after that point the PC will be less secure, which it will be.

hmmmm the family dynamics in your case is very interesting

i like to analyze human behaviour and its all very interesting

parents are: If its working leave it alone

but if the old os is w7 then an argument can be made to update the os, then the question becomes are they tech literate enough to understand or not. if your old os is w8 then you still have lots of time left on the windows update clock.

have you ever installed an os before?

Did you ask your parents what they will do after Jan 14 2020?

Are they planning to just use fb like nothing happened or...?

You don't HAVE to do anything in such a short period. Explain why it absolutely has to be tomorrow

You could also, in theory, shrink the partition by some amount and create another partition, then install windows 10 on that newly created partition.

Lots of partition manager software can do that.

Alternatively, just install Virtualbox and install Windows 10 within Virtualbox ... you can leave it without activation for 30 days.

It will do everything except run 3d games.

No, I did not install a OS before, but my friend who installed a OS already, will help me. Well, pretty sure they can understand if I explain it to them.

Well, I just helped with a hacked client related to a game  and I have to test it as I have to send it to the owner.

Also, I feel like going full on upgrade not with just a ssd or vb.

Nothing will happen after Windows 7 support ends on the 14th. It's not like it's gonna be end of the world.

You just won' get Windows Updates anymore. They're already not getting Windows updates - I doubt he or his parents are downloading manually the cumulative monthly security updates (ex November 2019 rollup: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4525235 )

You also won't get email or phone support or whatever support companies get, which you didn't do anyway, so you're not losing anything.

Stop scaring people... antiviruses will continue to work on Windows 7, the OS will continue to work, if it works fine now no reason to upgrade to a more bloated operating system.

You can run virtual machine in Windows 7, if it's a somewhat modern computer it supports virtualization and all that, so it will be snappy.

Anti-virus software is not the be all and end all. People who create viruses are very clever and can create viruses that even anti-virus software cannot detect.

Then just be smart about it and don't download stupid crap from porn sites and whatever.

Didn't you read? He wants to mess up the computer (he admits he never installed Windows 10 before) only because he has a hacked client and he needs to install windows TODAY to test the hack - he probably wants to cheat in some game or something like that.

He doesn't give a shit about computer running better with Windows 10 and doesn't really care about higher security.

Not worth bothering to help such people.

Well if that's the case then why do thousands of elderly and tech illiterate people still fall for these Microsoft tech support scams?

But oh no, they obviously don't give a shit about security...

As if it's any different from any other Windows installer...

You don't even need to DO anything, free upgrades still work. Just install the media creation utility and use it to run the upgrade.
