They can easily track you outside of what your IP is so using a VPN is a step in the right direction but you need a lot more to be semi protected

Great vid. Glad "Buttercup" mentioned Tails and TOR, and since this is a -BASIC- Guide, I'd love to see a more "My name is Zero Cool and this is my story" video in the future. Just wish more of a plug for PIA was in there. PIA is one of the ONLY VPNS that have a proven track record (in court) to not have any logs whatsoever. Even for being based in a 5-eyes company, that's saying a lot.

These VPN services seem to just run on fear mongering.

It's up to you to decide whether you care about lots of companies having your data. Companies share their data with each other and sell it to each other, including to political parties and government, and all the groups that collect data compile the data they get about you into a personal profile of yourself. If you're OK with companies and individuals at those companies, with government, with researchers, and with other entities having a comprehensive virtual profile on you that could be use in ways you like or don't like today and all the more in the future as the profiles on you become more comprehensive, then your personal decision on the matter is just as fine as someone's who doesn't feel the same way.

The thing is in this day and age going untracked on the web is becoming more and more tricky. Even with a VPN those cookies on your machine phone home and identify you. If you truly want a chance at going untracked then you need to do several things.


Clean out all cookies and browser data.

Get a good VPN that doesn't save data

Get a decent sinkhole like Pihole

Get Firefox or Tor (if you want to go even more extreme)

Then install an addon for firefox like no script.

Setup firefox to not keep any data and to not allow cookies

 

Now you have a good chance of not being tracked, but you need to make sure you are vigilant and do not allow cookies. Pi-Hole when properly configured is an extra later to block unwanted stuff coming in and more importantly stop it from phoning home. Normally this is more than the average user wants to do and TBH it is pretty much overkill anyways for most people. The data being gather doesn't actually give out any PII... it is just a metric attached to a cookie to help them provide more relevant ads (more money for them) or sell your usage data (more money). They aren't tracking your name, address, SSN, etc... That doesn't mean they couldn't if they truly wanted, but there is plenty of legal boundaries that mostly protects you there.

I can't imagine a scenario that so many browser history data points get leaked without more serious information getting leaked too. Browser history is the least important thing that gets leaked when a website is hacked. I don't see how if websites didn't track you, that data leaks would be less harmful.

Because they value privacy, security, and control over their person, and are aware of the ways their information can be misused. Great video, although CBC Marketplace covered online shopping & vacation booking a while back. In addition to using Tails OS, use of Mac spoofing and public wifi points (or open/broken residential access points, not that I condone crime of course), preferably outside the view of any security camera, could prove quite formidable, even if TOR and the VPN happen fo fail.

 

If sending highly sensitive data is required, I'm going to encrypt it offline before anything else. Veracryps exists, but 7-Zip also does a good job and is less obvious.

 

Again, not foolproof because PEBKAC, but a couple additional steps to make life difficult for any would-be masochists spies.
