story on how i destroyed my first gpu

GekkeTheun

i'm dutch so excuse me for my bad english.

okay so, this story is really stupid. i was 10 years old and just got a new pc. it had an amd a10 7870k and an rx 460. 5 months after i got it i decided to clean my graphics card when my mom was away, since my mom wouldn't allow me to get into my pc case, she was afraid that i would break something. i should've listened to her, because i knew nothing about computers and i wasn't very careful. anyways, i opened up my pc case. i tried pulling the graphics card out without unscrewing the screw but did notice the screw about 10 seconds later and i unscrewed it, removed the graphics card from the pc and voila. at this point, nothing seemed damaged, but just wait. as i said, i knew nothing about computers like most fucking 10 year olds. i unscrewed the screw on the graphics card, removed the heatsink with the fans (which went smoothly), i set aside the heatsink and the fans and i got the genius idea to wash my graphics card's pcb with water and soap.. and so i did. the pcb was wet and there was soap everywhere. i tried drying off the pcb with a hairdryer, but it didn't quite work because there still was a shitload of water on it. so i put back the heatsink without cleaning it and applying thermal paste, i screwed on all the screws on the gpu accept for one because i lost it, i plugged the card in without screwing the gpu slot screw in.. and... the system did boot, for 3 seconds. the fans on the gpu start spinning like crazy, and a few moments later the system died. the pins on the gpu were still dripping with water when i put it in, so that's probably why the whole system died. i do still wonder how it managed to still boot for 3 seconds though.

moral of the story, don't let your 10 year old mess around with computer hardware.

i do not look forward to getting roasted in the comments though.

Fair enough, if it was my kid I would have to.

What was the moment like when she found out? Did you come clean to her once she got back or wait till she found out?

i lied to her but she found out why the computer died. i told her my computer suddenly stopped working. she took it to computer specialists. they found out that the computer had died of a short circuit and they found the gpu just hanging in there without the screw screwed in, the heatsink missed one screw and the pins were bent because i left the card hanging in there without being secured by that screw.

moral of THIS story, just be honest when you break something. people are going to find out.

once again, excuse me for my bad english ?

Let's be honest there are quite a few morals to be learnt. Starting with Don't buy your 10-year-old a gaming PC

I wouldn’t go as far as to not let any 10 year old have a gaming pc BUT, have it secured with multiple Locke’s, bars, and laser systems ?
