My friend ask for a 8TB drive, best option?

he could only fit 1x 3.5" drive so I am doing some research..

 

the cheapest one is TOSHIBA Enterprise 8TB ~US$168

 

but I want to recommend him slightly better one:

Western Digital HGST Ultrastar DC HC320 7200rpm Enterprise Hard Disk 8TB ~US$184

 

any better suggestions?

 

it also lead me thinking is this the best deal considering a 2x WD 4TB blue drive is roughly $160? 

but its just at 5400rpm and not risking raid for such big volume.

Personally I would suggest seagate, and iron wolf pro if you heave the budget, but I am also not super experienced in high capacity drives

don't buy enterprise series(NAS variant). i have bad issue about durrability cheat. infact, they make poor quality to get quick services continously until his costumers feel tired until he want buy new again.

Seagate iron wolf nas 7200rpm ~$216,

To buck the trend here, might I suggest WD Black? I have been using WD Black 2TB and 4TB models in my rigs, a couple of my 2TB WD Black were from 2012, still going strong in my 3960X rig. Just got a WD 6TB for my latest build, I've had a Seagate Barracuda, a WD Blue and a WD Green fail on me, and these were purchased after my WD 2TB HDD's purchase. But as the others have said, try to get Enterprise HDD, I think WD has the Gold series....and as advised by others here, avoid any drive that is associated with NAS. I'm NOT a HDD guy, but even I knew that NAS HDD are to be avoided.....don't they usually spin at 5400rpm?

its a bit strange on WD line, max WD black capacity is 6tb, then comes the WD HGST Ultrastar DC HC320.

when getting huge drives , reliability comes first.

 

also arent NAS / enterprise drives designed to have better quality/ life span for 24/7 servers and shall be better than consumer drives (i.e. WD blue/ black etc)??

I have the 8TB Iron Wolf NAS, it has worked fine for any file types, i mostly use it for video.

The speed of 250mb/s is also very good. But it doesn't come with the free data recovery that the iron Wolf PRO comes with.

Plan on buying two, no matter what you decide.  8TB is a heck of a lot of data to lose unless it's easily recreated.  What is the main purpose of the drive?

well he could only fit one more drive in his case and I heard his 4tb died/ dying, considering the size, its for data storage

I also saw that video and he is talking about LaCie Porsche Design models. Know that people will always tend to demand from the things they buy, the LaCie product line basically offers an cool and beautiful designs, however they are still external hard drives, that means you can not pretend to use an external HDD as if If it were an internal hard disk, external HDDs are designed to write less frequently than an internal hard disk, that is, if you remove the HDD from an external enclosure and use it as if it were internal you will end up consuming the lifespan in just a fraction of time, besides void the warranty of course. 

The product he is reviewing is identified or was sold as a system component, that is, an OEM product configured for the OEMs only as components for their systems and I cannot generalize and base all my experience on a video opinion of one person, unfortunately I do not know the background of this HDD but I am not surprised if that HDD was not inside its external case properly sealed when arrived that place, nobody knows what people do with the HDDs so I can't take this as a definitive answer about the quality of an HDD or since we don't know if the disc was used improperly or not.

My brother bought a couple of 6TB Iron Wolf (albeit not the Pro ones) for the NAS and even two 4TB ones for the workstation as he works with video editing for a local news channel and the drives works for the intended purpose of storing all the video footages marvelously well, all of them have been running for almost a year with no signals of degradation what so ever.
