Have to do some major cleanup and cable management, will be back in a day or two with a pic or two. I've decided to use my OPPO HA-1 instead of the iFi Micro iDSD BL since I have a little more space after removing the speakers. Not dissing the iFi in any way, it's a damn good DAC combo, but prefer my HA-1 because it has a 4 pin Balanced headphone out and I have a number of cans, or cables, that can run Balanced. That includes my modded Denon Ah-D7000 + Lawton Angled Pads and my ENIGMAcoustics Dharma D1000. The iFi will go to my 2nd rig instead....

It is really nice to have balanced. My HDV820 has plenty of outputs. Balanced was a big game changer for me

I think, don't remember the exact model number, but that's probably it. I use it as a gamepad for games.

13EM7 tubes. Not very often used in amps, this is the only amp I know of that uses them

Photo taken when I was playing around with an essential phone, that's why it's black and white. I have a Focusrite 2i4, Sennheiser 6XX headphones, and I got a couple Yamaha HS5-SG studio monitors last month and placed them on the cheapest isolation foam Amazon sells. Also an MXL 880 mic not pictured. I'm hoping to add a headphone tube amp to the lineup within the next year although idk how realistic that is.

Ooookaaayyyyy.....

The majority DAC/AMP is my TEAC AI-101DA - It has two optical inputs from my main machines. It also has USB and analogue inputs which are hooked up to the AVermedia, because anything extra which is attached to the KVM, goes through the HDMI and via the AverMedia before hitting the TV, hence I can record anything that goes through the recorder. Audio is taken from the AverMedia and goes through the Teac. One thing that has to be noted is that the Teac's analogue input is digitised before amplification... so it's only analogue to the point where it goes into the box. Everything else is digital output.

In short, the majority of my equipment and PC's go through this unit. Four computers, the turntable and tape are permanently connected to the unit. It really is the hub of my audio.

IMG_0546.JPG.3d60c2b4b9552bb5a1d4454bbb0b0076.JPG

The Teac has a built in speaker amp and goes to these Castle Durham 900 bookshelf speakers. They are actually on a bookshelf and when I get the money, I'll be buying a TV to put between them, on a bracket so that I can get behind it easily, which will then place the speakers either side of the TV naturally...

IMG_0541.thumb.JPG.3e9ed1ae7079944c05ddc7b3847d7698.JPG

I started with AR bookshelf speakers that I had as a teenager, and I fixed them recently to replace the atrophied surrounds, and I also bought a pair of Q Acoustics 3020 bookshelf speakers... but even despite the positive reviews of the 3020, I prefer the sound of the Castles. The Q Acoustics were sold, and the AR's are in the living room.

Attached to the main PC is a Pro-Ject USB Box S. I chose it for the fact that it is powered by the USB input rather than needing a separate input. It outputs analogue which goes to......

IMG_0547.JPG.c79f75b6bd9b486d7aaf2caac70305a7.JPG

...the Little Dot I+ headphone amp. There was a problem with the amp dropping the right channel (a fault I read a lot of) and it had to go to an electronics expert for repair. He was not complimentary of the headphone jack. The provided valves were swapped out for others, and I eventually settled on the Mullard CV131. Note that the valves in this unit are only pre-amp and the main amp is integrated. The combo of USB DAC S and Little Dot I+ is what I relax to with a glass of wine of an evening.

IMG_0548.JPG.7b6e79fa907537ea3d20a5ae6588a809.JPG

As we've gone on to headphones, my main phones are the Senheiser 600-HD. The ones on the right are the Massdrop version which is on a 600HD band. Their resting on the Brainwavz headphone hooks that Linus featured on the handy tech under 100 (my favourite feature on LTT and I've bought some things from them, also note the Micro SD card holder in the picture above... another of the things that came from Handy Tech)... PLEASE ... MORE Handy Tech under 100.

IMG_0540.JPG.b085c0c50a6d03c9c585723f78d37e59.JPG

While we're still on phones, some of my other favourites are the Grado SR225e and Bayerdynamics DT 990 Pros. I do own others, as I went on a bit of a journey with headphones to see what I liked. (rant on) - I hate that internet shopping is killing physical shops where I could go to listen to various things before I buy them. (end rant) - I do prefer open back headphones. I live in a place where I can't turn up the volume of the speakers, so the headphones get a lot of use, and I've had to replace the foam bands on a number of occasions.

IMG_0550.JPG.dc7384313763c3d5ab113da2e51b7700.JPG

Perhaps my most odd combination is one that I take out walking which is the HD 480 1700R paired with the xDuoo X3.

IMG_0542.JPG.19ec09bee3abb5f1f683b2288e9d5d43.JPG

When I'm away from home, staying at a hotel or something, I'll take my AK70. It also doubles as a DAC which I use with my Macbook Air, as sometimes when I use the phone jack, I get noise which sounds like the CPU (or some circuitry) working away... so an external DAC helps. The Air runs Linux, by the way. Couldn't get on with MacOS as it didn't allow me fine control of things.

IMG_0549.JPG.ba730fbbb10be28e84e59f5bd0403cbc.JPG

One of my other favourite combinations is the Aiwa HS-P505 Mk 2 paired with the TY Hi-Z HP-650 ... I don't go for IEM's, these are as far as I go as I suffer with tinitus and I value what I've got left.

IMG_0543.JPG.4de05b55224e9314e0aa37c9f67d85d0.JPG

These are my prize possessions, the Aiwa HS-PX303 which sadly has suffered because the logic hasn't lasted well and the chips are difficult to get working again. I would not recommend these if you're looking to refirb a walkman. Expensive and not easy to get hold of, and if the logic chip has gone west... then you've got an expensive, retro paperweight.

IMG_0544.JPG.ebdec1b3ee733cb2dbde4c5434a18861.JPG

So I'm into analogue? Yes. Here is my turntable and tape deck - hardly an ideal set up, and even the K222ESJ is Japanese so I'm running an external transformer from 230 to 110v. The turntable is a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon and at some point I'll get myself a better table when I have a better place to keep it... it's good enough for now, where it is. It's normally covered by a polythene cover, but I've been using it recently and haven't got around to covering it back up again!

IMG_0545.JPG.1a435aad605045ea258f293ddfe549f7.JPG

If you're wondering about the walkmans, I repair them myself - https://ello.co/msknight/post/fy1lrtoxj9npk_dn6p6obg - some spares can still be obtained today and mostly come to ripping all caps off the boards, killing the acid and then putting new caps on. Some models usually have dead microswitches so those have to be done also. New belts can be had from some sources and there are communities dedicated to bringing these back.

The quality of audio is nice, when it's done right... and shows up the poor quality of mass duplicated cassettes. The following demo was recorded on the K222ESJ, played back on the P505 and recorded on a PC ... (non-monetised video - permission granted to use the recordings featured)

A series of inputs and switches allow me to pass the inputs from various devices, to various outputs without having to mess around plugging things in and out.

Do I have more kit than this? Hell yeah... because it's been a journey to work out what I like, and what I don't like.

So where does the analogue side come in? For me, it's been a connection with the medium and the music. My collections and playlists on digital are great, but it's just too much. Sometimes I sit and wonder what I'm going to listen to. The analogue has a physical connection. I have to slow down to handle the media and equipment. The LP's have great artwork that are easier for my ageing eyes to read, rather than a small CD case. It also allows me access to older material. I'm currently listening to "Mack The Knife" recorded by Louis Armstrong... which came to me on a 1950's single (it didn't contain the correct date printed on the 45) which I believe is 1956, recorded and published in Germany, in Mono. I cleaned it, ripped it and to my ears it's as good as if it came off CD. (part of that was converting the dual channel to a mono signal which seems to have not only cut out a degree of noise, but actually sharpened the vowels in the singing ... I have a friend at the pub whose career is an audio technician, and he agrees with me.)

The obvious cry is that of stereo imaging with my desktop setup. When I'm playing games, I use headphones as I've got to for the microphones anyway. The speakers are used when listening to music, and it's relation to the monitors doesn't really matter anyway... unless I'm doing serious listening at which point I just turn my chair to face the speakers, lean back and enjoy.

Heres my current setup. Main speakers are some focal 706's which are pretty fantastic for either near field or normal setups. Amp( not shown) is a smsl sa-50 with a schitt valhalla 2 being used as a preamp/headphone amp as well as a schitt modi 3 DAC. Headphones I now use are senheiser hd6xx's

They are pretty damn good for being $118 passive speakers. Big boomy low end without losing mids or highs. The imaging on them is probably the most impressive part didn't require much positioning for the speakers to "disapear."

purely for meme purposes :P

I got them back when radioshack was closing down for a great price. Thought I could flip them on ebay for a profit.
Little did I know ebay is so flooded with fake beats that real ones are basically unsellable unless you're happy to sell them at about 20% rrp.

Now I just keep them cause why not, and also, when I have a visitor or friend round who's curious about the high end audio stuff, it serves as a pretty good contrast to get them to try that, then try some 'proper' headphones.
