The 3820k is fine if it's what you have. Why spend more money than you have to?

If that 3820k is the cpu you have for your friend, go for it. If you are asking if you should purchase another 3820k for your friend, the answer is probably not.

I would stick with the 3820 It probably isn't worth it to upgrade to the 4770k

keep the 3820k and build around it. will mean youl have more to spend on other things like cooling or gpu

I would sell it if you can, because x79 is mostly just useful for memory bandwidth and multiway xfire/sli.

4770k is much more consumer and is actually better than that chip in most of the consumer application such as gaming etc.

If you can't sell it, it's not a big deal and you could build a system with it for around the same price and performance.

Don't you mean Sandy Bridge-E 3820? Last time I checked, it wasn't unlocked. The 4820K is Ivy Bridge-E. Still, I would go for 4770K over 4820, newer socket, better features, etc.

Build around it, it is a good CPU.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.
