Case is hot; is my GPU overheating or do I desperately need better cooling?

NunoLava1998

I have a Corsair 88R and started GPU mining. My GPU can be in two states:

  • 12h a day (while I'm on PC): GPU mining, fan is 55%, stays at 70-75C.
  • 12h a day (while I'm sleeping or not on my PC): GPU mining, fan is at 30% (I NEED TO FUCKING SLEEP!!!!), stays at 80-83C.

The thing is, I've been mining for the past 6-12h and I touched my case and it actually feels quite hot (20C ambient, but it's like 35C, so a 15C delta). My GPU is reporting 80C (this in the second state); hell parts of the case are at probably 40C.

Here's a basic heat map I made in paint.net:

image.png.7adf4d44c1142d90416ca3d7b189fe64.png

Red is 30-35C and purple is 40C+. The case is apparently made of Steel, and the windows are acrylic. Do I desperately need better case cooling, or is my GPU actually 750ºC and they missed a 0?

Should be fine, my case gets pretty warm under load too. I’m pretty sure GPU mining doesn’t make money anymore btw.

You wouldn't have a GPU if it was 750 C. Seems like pretty normal temps for mining.

Spoiler

Why are you mining anyway?

A warm case is an indicator that your cooling is working well.... sort of. The heat is leaving your CPU/GPU and being thrown into the case, which is good. If you have piss ass airflow the heat will stay in your case, making the exterior feel warm/hot. Ensure you have proper airflow and you'll be fine.

Thing is, the heat is being thrown into a part of my case with no ventilation at all, and just by touching the case in that area it's 40C. I wouldn't be surprised if inside it's 50C+. My PSU is only rated for 40C (although in different part of case). This is not a good operating environment

40 cent a day profit is great. I can buy one shitty case fan per month.

Is there a front intake fan on this case ?  If not there is no cool air going in which is why things can get hot and what not.

Well it should be fine, but to be sure you could fill up all the fan slots in your case. Rosewill Hyperborea is my pick for cheaper fans, they’re quiet, push a lot of air, and have good static pressure if you need that.

On the case there's one Corsair 120mm exhaust fan and nothing else. It only cools the backplate

Do you actually profit though? I imagine electricity costs hike up when you're running it 24/7.

I would move that to the front and pick up some more fans.

I don't pay the electricity, but if I did I actually do profit (electricity kWh costs here range from 0.068€/kWh to 0.12€/kWh depending on use)

The cheapest case fan I can find is the Arctic Cooling F12 120mm, for like 7€ each. Are these okay? I'm pretty limited on budget.

Is it okay for the case to be this hot inside though, or is it actually necessary that I buy fans? It's likely 40-50C inside which is toasty !!!

If you're looking for cheap quiet fans, try out the 800rpm version of the Scythe Kaze Flex 120.

My case is just as hot, if not hotter and nothing died yet. :P

I measured it at 53°C last time I checked.

If the PSU hits a certain thermal limit it will shutdown itself anyway, to prevent damage.

(Sorry, double post :s)

No free shipping here so I have to go for local stores. There are three stores; one I can't check availability (you have to call them which is annoying), one has 120mm fans starting at 20€ (lolnothxbye) and the other has F12s for 6€

F12 is decent. Get those.

Not good, no intake fan defeats the purpose of a case being cool.  Like the chap above said move it to the front and get a fan for the rear or vice versa and what not.

I'll try that; so I only have to buy one additional fan? (since the case comes with one)

I would leave the rear one installed.  Then just were guessing hopefully its 120mm fitting in the front which I chance it is.  Put one on to blow air into the case.

Yes GPU mining is profitable.  BTC Exchange market.  Mine low level coins, exchange for BTC.  I do so on my Furys when at work.  And CPU mine.  1700's do work.
