macbook pro for photographie?

Hello
my wife is a photographer and she wants to renew the laptop because the one she has is very old and does not give much more, it is a macbook pro of 2013 i5 4 gb ram

we had thought about buying the new macbook pro

Specifications:
Intel Core i7 six-core 2.2 GHz eighth generation (Turbo Boost up to 4.1 GHz)
Retina display with True Tone
Touch Bar and Touch ID
Radeon Pro 555X with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory
16 GB of DDR4 memory at 2,400 MHz
256 GB of SSD storage

for photo editing, how would that go? and how many years can it last? since they are 2800 euros ...

If you want a MacBook Pro, get a 13" with a dual or quad or one of the lower 15" if you need the bigger screen. Photoshop and such don't really use many cores, just want a few faster ones. The i7 in that MacBook has trouble hitting its boost when under load, tends to overheat a lot so you're not really getting a clock advantage.

My 2014 MacBook Pro 15” is still running great. I would recommend going with Apple since they use really good screens in their laptops. They have really good contrast, brightness, and color accuracy.

The throttling is for stress tests and video rendering. I doubt it would throttle photo editing. The 15” comes with a six core cpu and a gpu.

True, still not going to help much in anything that doesn't use all the cores. An i5 or quad core i7 with less heat output and a much lower price is still much better for this use case.

The real hold up you have ATM is the ram, and lack of an SSD.

 

More Ram and a SSD for the raw cache is gonna bring you a long way in Lightroom

 

You could probably step down on the cpu

I reccomend perhaps getting an older one, perhaps a mid 2015 i7 16gb ram macbook with an ssd (iirc they had either 256 or 500gb) it should be plenty. 

They are cheaper but very much still worth their money.

^^^ mid-2015s are the best built too IMO, and they have better keyboards, still an excellent trackpad, amazing screen, actual ports vs #donglelife, have temp issues as all Macs do, but not as bad as the newest ones. I used to work on a 2015 15", amazing machine, my ex-boss still uses it for video/photo editing and such.

People with a job won't have the time to find drivers and MacOS installation, let alone fixing drivers for hackintosh

For photo editing only, you wouldn't really need discrete GPU. All you need is a good CPU, 16GB ram, some SSD and a good display

I'd get the 13 inch with a core i5, 16GB of ram and 512GB SSD, this should set you back about 2200 euro. The 13 is easier to carry than the 15, not thermal throttle as much as the 15, a bit longer battery life and quad-core should be fine to handle RAWs.  

 

If you have spare change, spend it on a Thunderbolt 3 SSD, an inexpensive dongle, those will help with your workflow

What kind of photo editing are we talking about? Lightroom? Photoshop? 

 

If the editing is moderately intense, a base model 15" with whatever storage capacity she wants will work great.

I feel you could get better for a much lesser price than you would pay for a MacBook pro. The butterfly switches will get you if you plan on using this for more than a year. I recommend maybe a Razer blade pro 15" rtx 2070 with 4k screen or if you need less you power go for the gtx 1070 4K model. If she really just needs not too much xpu power she should get the Razer blade stealth 4k model and serial slim epgu. Or go for the almighty dell XPS 15. If course is what she needs then a MacBook pro will get you frustrated with how it throttles
